PROVO, Utah – BYU football picked up a commitment from Sierra Canyon wide receiver Josiah Phillips.

The 6-foot-5, 192-pound pass catcher that is nicknamed “JoJo” is a significant addition to BYU’s 2023 recruiting class.

“I would first like to thank God for all the blessings he has given me because none of this is possible without Him. Thank you to my family for being the biggest support system that anyone could ask for. Mainly I would like to thank my dad for his endless sacrifices and putting me in the best positions possible to be great. I would also like to thank every coach who has coached me through my years of football. Lastly, thank you to all the coaches who recruited me and believed in me even after taking a year away from football. With that being said I’ve decided to commit to Brigham Young University. Go Cougars.”

Just look at the eyeball emoji tweets that rolled in on Sunday from members of the BYU football staff.

BYU Passing Game Coordinator Fesi Sitake, who has been the primary recruiter of Phillips to BYU, the BYU football recruiting account, and others dropped the famed eyeball emoji for Phillips’ commitment.

Then an hour later, Aaron Roderick dropped a Bill Murray gif. So you knew BYU coaches were hyped about the latest addition from the recruiting trail.

Phillips is a three-star prospect in the 247Sports Composite ratings. He’s the 893rd-ranked recruit nationally in the Composite.

But Phillips’ star rating doesn’t tell the full story of his recruitment.

Josiah Phillips has had a unique recruitment

Due to COVID-19, Phillips didn’t play football last season. He focused solely on playing basketball. And it wasn’t just any prep basketball team.

At Sierra Canyon, Phillips is teammates with Bronny James, the son of NBA superstar LeBron James. Phillips’ prep hoops team has played games in NBA venues and on national television.

Before his pause from the gridiron and focus on hoops, Phillips was at Calabasas High and was well on his way to being one of the top receiver recruits in the country.

Back in 2019, Phillips received offers from LSU and Oregon.

Since he returned to football on the 7-on-7 circuit this past circuit, the offers began flowing in again for Phillips.

BYU offered him on March 30, then more offers followed from there, with Boston College, Colorado State, Utah State, Michigan State, and San Diego State getting into the mix.

Before the start of BYU’s fall camp practices, Phillips took in an unofficial visit to Provo and said, “the energy was unmatched.”

Phillips is now the 13th commit in BYU’s 2023 recruiting class. He’s the second-highest rated commitment in the class behind only four-star tight end Jackson Bowers.
