BOISE – BYU will take on Boise State on Saturday without star wide receiver Kody Epps.

Epps is out for the remainder of the season after suffering an upper-body injury in the loss to Liberty. The third-year freshman led BYU in receptions, receiving yards, and touchdowns.

He was officially ruled out for the season earlier this week by head coach Kalani Sitake.

“I’ve spoken with him, and he’s excited to keep his role as a leader on this team and to keep working with us. I’m excited about his energy and his approach to it,” said Sitake. “Not excited that we don’t get his production on the field.”

The former USA Today High School All-American receiver at Mater Dei in California had not spoken since suffering the injury. But he’s showing that he wants to uphold the role of a leader for BYU.

On Friday night, the day before BYU’s big rivalry game against Boise State, Epps shared a message on his Instagram stories.

“Being out for the season definitely sucks and I wish I could be out there with my brothers! While I can’t be there for my team physically I’m rocking with my boys in every other aspect possible. Thank you for all of the positive wishes. This season has been so fun for me and just a milestone for me to prove myself academically after getting accepted into the Marriott School of Business and also on the football field playing with the gang! I will be back stronger than ever but in the mean time let’s rock out tomorrow in the ICEY white and run the Smurf Turf!”

Epps will be one of the stars of BYU’s offense in their first year as a member of the Big 12 Conference. The 5-foot-11, 185-pound pass catcher, still has three years of eligibility remaining in his collegiate career.
