STANFORD, Calif. – BYU quarterback Jaren Hall left Saturday night’s win over the Stanford Cardinal with a right ankle injury.

It was the first time this season that Hall left a game early due to an injury. The second-year starting quarterback took hard hits in the Utah State game earlier this season that caused shoulder pain, but he didn’t leave that game.

Jaren Hall Injury: “Precautionary” right ankle

Against Stanford, on a 4th & 1 run, Hall suffered a setback to his right ankle.

During the game, the BYU Sports Network radio broadcast reported that Hall’s injury was precautionary. That message carried through to the postgame.

Thanks to an explosive ground attack led by Chris Brooks, BYU held off a late rally from Stanford to secure a 35-26 win without Hall in the final quarter.

After the victory that capped off BYU’s regular season with a 7-5 record. Hall took the postgame podium and addressed the media, discussing his injury.

“It’s a little sore. But it’s precautionary,” said Hall. “I wanted to get out before anything else happened. Just take a look at it and let the trainer do their thing. So, yeah, we’ll be alright moving forward.”

BYU coach Kalani Sitake had a similar message when asked if Jaren’s season was done.

“No. I think Jaren is going to be fine for the bowl game,” said Sitake.

Bowl game?

Will he be available for BYU’s to-be-determined postseason game?

“Yeah, I think when we were looking at it coming back, I think it was going to be difficult for him to function at a high level, and so we made the decision to keep him out. I felt good about it. But he feels good about being able to come back.”

Sitake added that the initial X-Rays for Hall’s ankle returned negative.

“Everything’s good, everything’s good. So nothing serious,” Hall said after being asked about the initial x-ray.

Hall was asked if playing in a bowl game was still possible, “Absolutely.”

As Saturday’s game played out, BYU prioritized the ground attack against a wounded Cardinal defense. As a result, BYU rushed for 358 yards, with Hall accounting for 69 yards on 11 carries and a touchdown run.

It was a night where Hall ran the ball as many times as he attempted passes (11). Hall finished with 93 yards, and two touchdown passes through the air.

Moving forward for Hall

Coming into the season, BYU offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick emphasized not designing runs for his star quarterback, as he was too valuable for the team’s success. During BYU’s current three-game winning streak, Hall’s name has been called more frequently for designed runs.

Hall has dealt with his share of injuries over the years. Last season, he missed the Independence Bowl due to a foot injury. Plus, he was playing through cracked ribs.

In 2020, Hall was sidelined due to a hip injury. Then in 2019, he missed time due to concussions.

Hall finished the 2022 regular season with 3,171 passing yards, 31 touchdowns, and only six interceptions. On the ground, he rushed for 348 yards.
