Instant Replay: Utah State’s Steven Ashworth Scores 1,000th Career Point

Mar 11, 2023, 1:22 AM

LAS VEGAS, Nevada – Utah State Aggie point guard Steven Ashworth became the 41st player in program history to reach the 1,000-point plateau.

Ashworth scored his 1,000th career point with a first-half three against Boise State in a 2023 Mountain West Championships semifinal game.

The junior guard needed just eight points to reach the career milestone but got off to a slow start against the Broncos. Missing his first five shots, two free throws were all the Aggies leading scorer could muster against a disruptive Bronco defense.

Ashworth found the range late in the first half, hitting two quick threes to halt a Boise State run.

He finished the night with 14 points on 4-of-13 shooting and 3-of-10 from deep.

Utah State overcame an eight-point halftime deficit to pick up the 72-62 win. The victory propels USU to the 2023 Mountain West Championship game against San Diego State.

At Lone Peak HS, Ashworth averaged 16.4 points, 7.4 assists, 4.1 rebounds, and 3.1 steals per game as a senior. In his final year, he led the Knights to the Utah 6A state title.

Ashworth earned a host of accolades at Lone Peak. He was named to the GEICO National all-tournament team and the Utah Valley Boys Basketball Player of the Year, Utah 6A MVP, and first-team all-state during his final year at Lone Peak HS.

As a freshman, he played in 29 games and scored in double-digits eight times. He averaged 6.1 points per game while shooting 35.7 percent from the field and 36.5 percent from the perimeter.

During the 2021-22 season, Ashworth played in 33 of 34 games, starting 15. He became the only Utah State player to score 20 or more points in multiple games, notching a career-high 27 at Weber State. He finished with 287 points (8.7 ppg) while finishing second on the team with 119 assists.

This season, Ashworth earned first-team all-Mountain West with a career year. Starting all but ten games, he finished as the eighth-leading scorer in the Mountain West at 16.3 points per game. He led the league in free throw percentage (.889), three-point percentage (.450), and threes made per game (3.2). His 4.7 assists ended as the fourth-best mark in the league.

Ashworth notched a season-high 30 points against Oral Roberts in November. He made a career-high eight threes in an early-February win at Colorado State.

During Mountain West play, Ashworth ranked first in free throw percentage (.920) and 3-pointers made per game (2.72), second in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.90), third in assists per game (4.83), third in 3-point percentage (.392), tied for eighth in steals per game (1.28) and ranked 10th in points per game (15.56).
