SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Utah senior quarterback Tyler Huntley has been tremendous in the first three games of the season for the Utes. He hasn’t been sacked and is one of the most accurate quarterbacks in the country.

Through three games, Huntley hasn’t been sacked, which Utah is one of four teams to not allow a sack this year, joining UAB, Air Force and New Mexico.

Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham gives credit to both the offensive line and Huntley’s athletic ability to slip away from potential sacks.

“Combination because there have been a handful of times that a quarterback not as athletic as Tyler would have gone down,” Whittingham said. “So Tyler has done a nice job of having pocket awareness, sensing the rush and feeling it and getting himself out of some jams. Not only to get out of a jam and run, but also he has gotten out of a jam and thrown the ball and found receivers which is good.”

Accuracy Success

Huntley has completed 42 of his 54 pass attempts for 602 yards and 4 touchdowns through three games. His 195.9 quarterback rating is good for seventh in the country. He also hasn’t turned the ball over.

According to Pro Football Focus-College, Huntley’s adjusted completion percentage to this point in the season is the highest in college football at 90 percent. Higher than LSU quarterback Joe Burrow, Washington State’s Anthony Gordon and Justin Fields from Ohio State.

Whittingham was asked who gets the credit for Huntley’s accuracy, the wide receivers, the quarterback or both.

“Both. And credit the offensive line for holding up in pass protection most of the time,” Whittingham said. “We don’t have a sack yet, but we very well could or should have had a few. It is a matter of Tyler making good decisions, it is a matter of the receivers making very few drops. If we make all the catches we should have made, he’s probably way over 80-percent, but I guess you don’t always catch every ball you should catch. He has been just phenomenal. We haven’t done a ton of throwing, averaging about 18 a game, but the real key is that he has really embraced what we are doing offensively. Him and Andy (Ludwig) are really on the same wave length.”

Snubbed From Watch List

Back in the off-season when players were being named to preseason watch lists, Huntley was left off of the Davey O’Brien watch list, which is given to the best quarterback in college football. Back then, KSL Sports radio host and former Utah and NFL quarterback Scott Mitchell wasn’t happy about that.

“If Tyler Huntley stays healthy and the way he was playing last year because he was playing well. I feel I have to say this over and over again, and I am tired of defending him,” Mitchell said on KSL’s Unrivaled. “I can’t figure out these people… Steven Montez from Colorado – who has done what the past couple of years?!”

Utah State quarterback Jordan Love was named to the preseason watch list.

The Utes will face the USC Trojans in their Pac-12 opener on Friday at 7 p.m. on FS1.
