SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Caleb Lohner is an incoming freshman for the University of Utah men’s basketball team.

On June 5, reports surfaced that Lohner asked Runnin’ Utes head coach Larry Krystkowiak for a release from his national letter of intent.

According to It’s Utah’s World podcast co-host and 247 Sports reporter Steve Bartle, Lohner asked to be released from his letter of intent at Utah in order to play for rival BYU and head coach Mark Pope in Provo.

Lohner’s father, Matt, played guard for the Cougars from 1994-1996.

In October 2019, Lohner’s Wasatch Academy teammate Richie Saunders committed to BYU. Saunders officially signed with Pope and the Cougars in November 2019.

The Utes signee first committed to Krystkowiak and the Utes in August 2019 before officially signing with Utah in November 2019.

Lohner is a 6’6, 200-pound forward from Texas. He began his high school career with Flower Mound High School in Flower Mound, Texas. Lohner averaged just four points per game as a freshman before posting 17.8 points per game as a sophomore in 2017-18.

After his time in Flower Mound, Lohner moved to Utah to play his final year of high school basketball at Wasatch Academy in Mount Pleasant.

According to 247Sports, Lohner is a three-star prospect and is the second highest-rated recruit from Utah. He is ranked as the No. 34 power forward in the country and No. 187 overall player in the nation.

Before committing to Utah, Lohner received offers from Baylor, BYU, Kansas State, TCU, Texas, and Texas A&M.

sports.ksl.com Utah Utes Insider Trevor Allen on Caleb Lohner

After committing to the Runnin’ Utes program, sports.ksl.com Trevor Allen shared his thoughts on Lohner’s game.

“He has good length at 6’6 and can run the floor well and can make some sharp passes. His shooting is good and has the ability to attack the basket using his ball-handling skills. Lohner is also a strong rebounder,” Allen wrote. “Lohner will provide needed depth at the wing position and give Timmy Allen some assistance at the forward position.”
