Ogden, Utah – Over the past few years when college running backs from the state of Utah are mentioned everyone goes to the University of Utah with guys like Zack Moss, Devonte Booker, or Joe Williams. However, there is a back up north at Weber State who could have an even better college career.

That is Weber State’s Josh Davis.

In his first two years playing with the Wildcats, he is a two-time All-American, a two-time All-Big Sky first team, and helped lead the team to back-to-back FCS playoff runs. In just 28 games is already fifth all-time in rushing yards in school history.

National Championship Is Ultimate Goal

Davis joined KSL Unrivaled and host Scott Mitchell said he knew Davis would be a stud running back after calling some of his high school games and even compared his running style to Mitchell’s former teammate Barry Sanders.

Davis is modest when discussing how he is able to break tackles and make big plays.

“In the moment it makes sense but I just decide to make them miss and just get through the hole, I never had a time where I was like, ‘look at that move,'” Davis said.

The Wildcats have extremely high expectations and are looking to get to their first-ever FCS title game after coming up short in the semifinals last year against James Madison.

“I don’t think you need to convince anyone [that we are good], coach has been doing a great job and the staff has taken off and trying to lead us to a national championship, but I am here just for the ride,” Davis added. “Personally, I think we have been the team the past three years to beat, but I think this year we will get there and this is the year we are going to be in the national championship game.”

The Wildcats are getting a lot of respect. Athlon has them third in their FCS preseason top 25 and HERO Sports has them at sixth, so the expectations are sky-high.

Transitioning To A New Style Of Workouts

Just like other programs across the country, Weber State is slowly getting back into working out as a team. The Wildcats’ campus is now allowing student-athletes back to work out but the configuration is nowhere near what it used to be.

“All the gyms are closed so our strength and conditioning coach sent us at-home workouts to do,” Davis said. “Now it is coming back and we just started up. It is a bit funky as we are working out in masks and with 17 player groups and not your position or even 30 or 35 people. It is difficult at times but you don’t have to wear a mask when running it is somewhat lenient but we have to keep the mask on at times but it can be claustrophobic.”

“We can only have two people at a rack but they are doing a great job in finding a way through it to get football and players back in shape.”

The workout part has to be a big adjustment as is not having any spring football to get ready for the 2020 season. These changes are impacting every team across the country so it makes the playing field more even for every college football program but it is still a big change in prepping and staying in shape for this season.
