2020 BYU Football Opponent Tracker: Attention Focuses On Army During Bye Week

PROVO, Utah – BYU football is one of nine FBS teams that opened this unique 2020 college football season with a victory. The Cougars now have this week off and will get to watch college football around the country like the rest of us.

Which games will the Cougars be watching? The attention of BYU fans, coaches, and players will likely zero in on West Point, New York. Where BYU’s next opponent, Army, will host Louisiana-Monroe.

That game and a handful of other BYU opponents are in action this weekend. Here’s a roundup of what’s on deck for week two from BYU’s 2020 opponents.

Navy (0-1)

After a 52-point defeat against BYU on Labor Day, Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo had the Midshipmen hitting in practice for the first time this season. Will the physicality work in their AAC opener against Tulane on September 19th? BYU handed Navy the type of loss that could alter an entire season if they don’t pick up the pieces in a hurry.

Army West Point (1-0)

Last week: 42-0 win against Middle Tenessee State

This week: Louisiana-Monroe, 11:30 a.m., CBS Sports Network

Along with BYU, Army produced one of the top performances from college football’s opening week. The Black Knights capped off their dominant performance against the Blue Raiders last week in the fourth quarter with a 19-play 99-yard touchdown drive that took 12:26 of game time.

The Trojans from Troy, Alabama, open up their 2020 season on September 19th against Middle Tennessee State.

The Roadrunners open up their 2020 season with a rivalry matchup against Texas State. Saturday’s game will be the first game for new head coach Jeff Traylor who was previously the running back coach at Arkansas the past two seasons.

Houston was supposed to face crosstown rival Rice this weekend, but the Owls postponed the start of their 2020 season till September 26th at the earliest. The Coogs open their 2020 slate with an intriguing Friday night AAC matchup against Memphis next week.

Texas State (0-1)

This week: UTSA, 1:30 p.m., ESPN2

College Football’s most-watched game by the number of viewers in week one involved Texas State. The Bobcats 31-24 loss against SMU pulled down 1.228 million viewers. Last week, the Bobcats played without tight ends due to quarantine restrictions.

Western Kentucky (0-0)

This week: at Louisville, 6 p.m., ACC Network

A pre-season favorite to the win Conference-USA’s east division, the Hilltoppers return 16 starters, including one of the nation’s top defensive ends in DeAngelo Malone, who had 11.5 sacks last season. How they fare against a Louisville team that’s trending up in the ACC will be an excellent measuring stick game.

The Lions are playing four non-conference games this fall. UNA’s first or four matchups is on October 3rd when they travel to Lynchburg, Virginia, to play the Liberty Flames.
