PROVO, Utah – BYU football home games will look different in 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic. It was expected when BYU announced the home attendance would only consist of 6,000 fans for this Saturday’s game against Troy.

To try and have as many fans as possible in the 63,725-seat LaVell Edwards Stadium, BYU offers up a chance for Cougar fans to purchase cutouts of themselves to have placed inside the stadium during home games.

BYU fans in cardboard form

It’s called the BYU Football Fan Pack. A chance for fans in 2020 to “show off their Cougar pride, even if they can’t be at every game this year.”

BYU is offering two different packs for fans, and each features the opportunity to have a cutout of themselves placed in LES during gamedays in Provo this fall.

Price starts at $120 for the “Heisman Pack,” which features the cardboard cutout, a BYU yard sign, flag, signed football poster, koozie, concessions cup, Cougar Crunch, and stickers.

For fans that purchase the package, they’ll receive a follow-up email about the cutout and how to upload the picture.

Cardboard cutouts at sporting events have been standard since sports started back up in July during COVID-19. Major League Baseball was the first to use cardboard fans in their home stadiums here in the United States. The NFL has adopted cardboard fans for their empty venues as well.

BYU hopes to eventually have up to 24,000 real-person fans in the stands at some point during the home football schedule. This Saturday against Troy, only 6,000 fans will be in attendance, including students, the family of players, and season ticket holders. The maximum attendance for each home game is going to be determined on a game-by-game basis. BYU has worked closely with the Utah Department of Health and other local health departments to reach the 24,000 fan mark. The Utah Department of Health approved the 24,000 fan plan earlier this month.

But if they can’t attend, they can still say they were in LES this fall with a cutout.
