Zach Wilson Throws Sidearm TD Pass To Give Kavika Fonua First Career Score

PROVO, Utah – BYU quarterback Zach Wilson was dealing as he has the entire season on Saturday against North Alabama. Wilson tossed four touchdown passes in the first half against the helpless Lions from the FCS ranks.

One of those four touchdown passes was to two-way standout Kavika Fonua. Fonua, safety and running back for the Cougars, found the endzone for the first time in his career.

The senior from Syracuse, Utah, has played a variety of positions during his BYU career. From safety, running back, linebacker, back to safety, and then another stint at running back. Fonua has done it all for BYU but didn’t score a touchdown until Saturday against the Lions.

Wilson’s pass to Fonua was a sidearm ball, showing off the arm angles and strength that have made him one of the fastest rising NFL Draft prospects in the class of 2021.

The 22-yard touchdown score was BYU’s last touchdown of the first half and put the Cougars up by a score of 42-7.

Fonua is taking running back snaps on Saturday due to the injury to Lopini Katoa. Katoa suffered an injury in the second half against Boise State and was ruled out on Saturday before kickoff. The injury opened the door for Fonua, who has played both offense and defense during the Cougars’ dominant performance against the Lions.
