SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The University of Utah men’s basketball team is set to play against the Boston College Eagles in the opening round of the Sunshine Slam, according to CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein.

The college basketball insider first reported Utah’s participation in the tournament in mid-June. KSL Sports has confirmed the report.

The Sunshine Slam tourney is set to take place in Daytona Beach, Florida from November 20-21. The event will reportedly feature Utah, Boston College, Rhode Island, and Tulsa.

“Source: Utah will play Boston College and Rhode Island will face Tulsa in the first round of a Daytona Beach based early season tournament in November,” Rothstein tweeted on Friday, July 2.

The multi-team event will also feature a home game at the Jon M. Huntsman Center. The opponent, time and date are to be determined.

The Gazelle Group is running the Sunshine Slam, which also runs the Empire Classic, the Legends Classic, the Gotham Classic and the College Basketball Invitational. It’s the first time in Utah basketball history that they will participate in the Sunshine Slam.

Craig Smith has taken over as the head coach of the Runnin’ Utes following a 10-year tenure from Larry Krystkowiak. This is the first scheduling news for the program under Smith. They will have to get a full non-conference schedule in the books and getting an MTE nailed down is a great start.
