Eddy Alvarez, USA Baseball Fall To Japan In Extra Innings

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Former SLCC star Eddy Alvarez and USA Baseball fell to Japan in extra innings 7-6 on Monday morning at the Tokyo Olympics.

Eddy Alvarez had four at-bats, posting one hit that scored a run in USA Baseball’s loss to Japan.

Japan scored two runs in the third inning to lead off the high-scoring affair. But that lead didn’t last long when Eddy Alvarez came to bat in the top of the fourth inning. He picked up a base hit. The United States quickly tied the game by scoring two runs over a span of just four pitches.

Team USA was able to get a RBI double before the fourth inning ended and held a 3-2 lead. That hot streak leaked into the top of the fifth inning for the United States after Japan scored a run in the fourth. The U.S. scored another three runs in the fifth and had a 6-3 lead going into the bottom of the fifth inning. That lead was due to a three-run homer.

When Team Japan came to the plate at the bottom of the fifth, they scored two runs to cut the deficit to 6-5. The bats cooled off until the bottom of the ninth when Japan scored a run to send the game to extra innings. The way that extra innings work in the Olympics is that the inning starts with a runner on second and a runner on first.

The United States didn’t score in the top of the 10th inning and Japan scored one run in the bottom half of the inning to pick up the win.
