SALT LAKE CITY, UtahPFF listed BYU sophomore Jaren Hall as one of its top breakout quarterback candidates for the upcoming 2021 college football season.

Hall was listed as one of PFF’s 10 potential breakout quarterbacks this season.

PFF’s Top Breakout QB Candidates for 2021

The following quarterbacks were listed as breakout quarterback candidates by the football website:

  • D.J. Uiagalelei (Clemson)
  • Emory Jones (Florida)
  • Taulia Tagovailoa (Maryland)
  • Graham Mertz (Wisconsin)
  • Jayden De Laura (Washington State)
  • Grant Gunnell (Memphis)
  • Casey Thompson (Texas)
  • Tanner Mordecai (SMU)
  • Jaren Hall (BYU)
  • Bailey Zappe (Western Kentucky)

If he wins BYU’s starting quarterback job this season, Hall will be tasked with replacing Zach Wilson, who the New York Jets selected with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft after his performance last season.

“Hall is set to receive the impossible task of replacing BYU legend Zach Wilson, who last season earned the highest single-season PFF grade ever given to a non-Power Five quarterback,” PFF’s Anthony Trash wrote. “The last time Hall saw game action was in 2019. He showcased toughness, athleticism, arm strength and an ability to play on the move, all things coaches desire at the quarterback position, ultimately earning a 77.3 PFF grade across 55 dropbacks.”

Hall has played for the Cougars since 2018.

During his BYU career, the sophomore has seen action in nine games, including a couple of starts in 2019.

Hall missed the entire 2020 campaign.

In his college career, Hall is 31/46 passing for 420 yards and one touchdown with a 67 percent completion rate. He’s also run the ball 29 times for 139 yards and three touchdowns.

“Hall is unlikely to replicate the level of production Wilson provided, but he certainly has the talent to rank among the nation’s top non-Power Five quarterbacks and hold off the kind of debilitating regression that will threaten this BYU program. The only thing he needs to do is avoid injury and play the season from start to finish, something he has struggled with in the past.”

Hall is currently competing for the QB1 job with fellow sophomore Baylor Romney and freshman Jacob Conover.

BYU opens its 2021 season against the Arizona Wildcats on Saturday, September 4 at 8:30 p.m. (MDT). The game will take place at Allegiant Stadium, the home of the Las Vegas Raiders. It will broadcast on ESPN and KSL NewsRadio 102.7 FM and 1160 AM.
