PROVO, Utah – BYU football pulled off a memorable victory over the Virginia Cavaliers on October 30. The Cougars took down the Hoos, 66-49 in a game that put up some record-setting numbers.

Here’s a breakdown of the notable outputs in the box score from BYU-Virginia.

66 Points: Most by BYU football against a Power Five opponent

BYU’s 66 points against Virginia were the most ever scored by a Cougar Football team against a Power Five opponent. The previous high was against UCLA in 2008, where BYU shut out the Bruins, 59-0.

UCLA finished that season 4-8. Virginia is bowl eligible and in the thick of the ACC Coastal Division race.

Like Saturday’s game against Virginia with Bronco Mendenhall and his staff returning, the UCLA matchup in 2008 also had a homecoming. Former BYU OC Norm Chow was the play caller for the Bruins.

Second-highest output against a P5 this season

It’s not often you see a Power Five team give up a point total in the 60s. BYU’s 66 points against Virginia is tied for the second-most by a team over a Power 5 during the 2021 college football season. The highest was Texas scoring 70 points on Texas Tech.

BYU is tied with Ohio State who put up 66 on Maryland.

Most points ever scored on a Bronco Mendenhall-coached team

BYU’s 66 points are the most points ever scored on a Bronco Mendenhall-coached team. The most allowed by Bronco’s BYU teams was 55. It happened twice in 2014 (Boise State, Memphis) and in 2007 (Tulsa).

Most points allowed by Virginia since 1977

The last time Virginia gave up 66 points or more in a game was back in 1977 against the Texas Longhorns.

1,322 combined yards: LaVell Edwards Stadium record

BYU’s offense wasn’t the only one flying high on Saturday night at LES. Virginia had numerous explosive plays to celebrate as well. Between the Cougars and Cavaliers, the two teams combined for 1,322 yards to set a new single-game record for most combined yards by two teams at LES.

BYU finished with 734 yards, Virginia ended up with 588.

The previous high was also in the Kalani Sitake era. A thriller against Toledo in 2016 (1,278).

300+ pass, 300+ rushing

BYU ended Saturday night’s win against Virginia with 349 passing yards and 385 rushing yards. It’s only the fourth time in BYU football history that the Cougars have had a game where they had at least 300 through the air and 300 on the ground.

Tyler Allgeier runs for 266 yards

Allgeier’s impressive 29 carry, 266-yard night was the third-highest single-game rushing effort by a BYU player in program history. The only two players to finish with a higher output in a game are Jamaal Williams (286, Toledo) and Eldon Fortie (272, George Washington 1962),

Five TDs for Allgeier

The sophomore from Fontana, California rushed for five touchdowns, tying the single-game BYU record for most touchdown runs in a game. Allgeier tied Jamaal Williams (2016 Toledo), Luke Staley (2001 Colorado State), and Eric Lane (1979 Utah State).

107 yards for Nacua brothers

Both brothers Puka Nacua and Samson Nacua finished the night with 107 receiving yards and one touchdown. Puka had 12 targets which was good for eight catches and Samson was targeted six times for three grabs.

Career night for Jaren Hall

BYU QB Jaren Hall posted career highs in passing yards (349), completions (22), passing touchdowns (3), and total touchdowns (4).

700+ yards of offense

BYU finishing with 734 yards of offense is the 12th game in BYU football history with at least 700 yards of offense.
