Jazz Clip Tired Atlanta Team To Snap Losing Streak

SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah Jazz ended their two-game losing streak with a 110-98 win over the Atlanta Hawks.

The Jazz snapped out of their shooting funk knocking down 15-38 from the three-point line (39 percent), their second-most efficient shooting night of the season, including a combined 9-20 from Donovan Mitchell and Jordan Clarkson.

The Hawks knocked down a terrific 18-35 from the three-point line, but managed just 18 points in the final quarter to suffer their fifth consecutive loss.

Jazz Flip Script From Magic Loss

In Orlando, the Jazz fell to the Magic on the second night of back-to-back games after losing in Miami the night before. The Jazz were able to stick with the Magic through the first 36 minutes of the game, but ultimately fell apart down the stretch managing just 15 points in the final period.

Atlanta came into Utah having lost to the Golden State Warriors on Monday night, and like the Jazz against Orlando, we’re able to keep the game close for most of the first three quarters.

Fueled by 55 points from Trae Young and Kevin Huerter, the Hawks hot shooting kept the game within striking distance.

However, Young and Huerter cooled off in the final period combining to miss all five of their shot attempts to give the Jazz the comfortable win.

The Jazz found themselves on the wrong end of a tough schedule in their loss Sunday, but we’re repaid by the NBA on Tuesday.

Jazz Find Shooting Stroke

Maybe if the Jazz faced the Hawks every night the main narrative through the first 11 games of the season wouldn’t be the sudden drop in the team’s shooting percentage.

After knocking down 17 threes in last Thursday’s 116-98 win on 41 percent shooting from deep, the Jazz poured in 15 more threes at home for their second-best average of the season.

Before Tuesday’s win, coach Quin Snyder pointed out that the Jazz had the NBA’s second-best offensive rating entering the night despite the team’s poor shooting. Part of the reason the Jazz were able to maintain an elite offense despite failing to hit shots was their ability to get to the free-throw line, score at the rim, and grab offensive rebounds.

But against Atlanta, the Jazz shot just 16 free-throws, seven below their season average, and managed just eight offensive rebounds, nearly three below their season average. However, due to 42 points in the paint and 15 makes from the three-point line, they were able to finish the night with a 122.2 offensive rating.

Through 10 games, the Jazz had an offensive rating of 113.3 trailing only the Philadelphia 76ers entering, and managed to do that despite being a bottom-five shooting team to open the year.

If the Jazz shooting woes are behind them, watch for their offensive rating to skyrocket in the coming weeks.

Hawks Rare Feat

The Hawks became just the 11th team in NBA history to knock down at least 18 threes but fail to break the century mark scoring..

The Hawks shot just 19-50 from inside the three-point line, including 2-11 on non-paint two-point shots which ultimately led to the loss.

It takes that type of poor performance inside the arc to shoot that well from three and still fail to score 100 points. Like the Hawks Tuesday, each of the 10 teams to reach the feat previously also lost their games.

Atlanta had the third-best shooting percentage in league history for a team that knocked down at least 18 threes but failed to break the 100 point mark. In 2008, the Miami Heat lost to the Washington Wizards despite shooting 58 percent on their 19 made threes, while the Sacramento Kings lost to the San Antonio Spurs in 2018 despite knocking down 18 threes on 53 percent shooting.

Atlanta shot 51 percent from the three-point line, the second-best of any Jazz opponent this season, but still managed to lose their fifth straight.
