SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah Tech football team suffered a road loss to the Sacramento State Hornets to open the 2022 season.

The Hornets hosted the Trailblazers on Saturday, September 3.

Sacramento State defeated Utah Tech, 50-33.

The Trailblazers struggled to get things going in their first game and quickly found themselves in a three-score hole at the end of the opening quarter. Down 21-0, Utah Tech finally found its first points of the night on a field goal five minutes into the second quarter.

However, Sacramento State was swift to stop Utah Tech’s momentum and responded with another touchdown with two and half minutes left in the first half.

34 seconds later, the Trailblazers stomped their way into the end zone for the first time thanks to a 29-yard connection between Kobe Tracy and Deven Osborne. The Trailblazer touchdown cut the Hornets’ lead to 28-10.

Utah Tech was unable to slow down Sacramento State before the break as the Hornets stung the Trailblazers for another touchdown with only 18 seconds left in the second quarter and took a commanding 35-10 lead into the locker room.

After the halftime break, Utah Tech was the first to put points on the scoreboard. Quali Conley ran the ball for five yards and six points midway through the third quarter to make a 35-17 game.

Sacramento State would finish the quarter by adding a pair of touchdowns while Utah Tech was only able to tack on a field goal.

The Trailblazers scored a pair of touchdowns and held the Hornets scoreless in the fourth quarter, but it was too late to overcome the early deficit.

Tracy finished the game 23/40 passing for 339 yard and two touchdowns. Utah Tech’s receivers were led by Joey Hobert’s 11 receptions for 183 yards and Osborne’s six catches for 113 yards. Hobert and Osborne each snagged a touchdown reception. Conley added 13 carries for 48 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

With the loss, the Trailblazers fell to an 0-1 record.

Utah Tech’s next game is at home against Chadron State on Saturday, September 10 at 7 p.m. (MDT). The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
