SALT LAKE CITY – Utah State quarterback Logan Bonner shared his thoughts after hearing boos from crowd at Maverik Stadium during the Aggies’ loss to the Weber State Wildcats.

The Aggies fell to a 1-2 record on the season after getting blown out at home by Weber State, 35-7, on Saturday, September 10. Bonner finished the game 12/31 passing for 120 yards and three interceptions.

The senior from Rowlett, Texas played most of the contest and was replaced by Cooper Legas when the game was out of reach in the fourth quarter. During the game, boos from the crowd showered down on the USU players as they suffered a loss to an FCS opponent.

Two days after the defeat, Bonner spoke about the Aggies’ loss and the impact of the boos sent from the stands at Maverik Stadium down to the players on the field and sideline.

“Yeah, I’d be lying — I mean, every player would be lying if they said they didn’t hear it,” Bonner told Hans Olsen and Scott Garrard during his weekly interview on the Hans & Scotty G show on KSL Sports Zone. “I mean, there’s nearly 20,000 people here. You hear everything and they’re all collectively doing the same thing. So I understand it. They weren’t happy about how we were playing and we weren’t either. I get where they’re coming from, and yeah, it hurts, but it doesn’t really affect me. I can’t let it affect me, I gotta do my job and they’re part of the atmosphere as well. So that’s all I can really say about that.”

Following Utah State’s loss, head coach Blake Anderson defended Bonner and blasted the people who booed.

“That’s the same quarterback that won the Mountain West Conference Championship last year. The first one ever at this university. He’s coming off a knee injury in less than nine months and he’s not the only person to make mistakes,” Anderson said. “So it’s just really easy to sit in the stands and boo…right now Logan Bonner is the starting quarterback — He deserves that opportunity and he also deserves respect. I don’t know how to say it any nicer. We had a lot of our fanbase show true colors today and it was embarrassing.”

Bonner continued by saying that he and the Aggies aren’t making excuses for their play. Although, he mentioned that taking “the high road” is “extremely hard” sometimes.

“It doesn’t matter if they’re booing or cheering for us, we still got a job to do,” the quarterback added. “I think that it always good to have fans in the crowd and these fans have supported us tremendous throughout the year and a half I’ve been here, and they didn’t like what they saw. And we didn’t like how we played.”

He shared that Utah State’s mindset is to “keep moving forward” after suffering a second consecutive defeat, but added that hearing the boos was hurtful.

“Hopefully, it never gets to that point again.” Bonner said. “It sucks. It’s not fun, it hurts.”

Utah State will look to bounce back after a bye week in Week 3. The Aggies next game is a home matchup against UNLV on September 24 at 5 p.m. (MDT). The game will be broadcast on CBS Sports Network and KSL Sports Zone 1280 AM.

Listen to the Hans & Scotty G show weekdays from 12-3 p.m. (MDT) on KSL Sports Zone.
