Senior Day Is A Special Event, Even More So This Year For Utah Football

SALT LAKE CITY— Senior Day in college football is a significant tradition that honors the graduating players of a team. For Utah football, that day comes this Saturday against Iowa State, and this Senior Day is particularly special.

For many players, Senior Day is an emotional milestone. It marks the transition from college athletics to the next phase of their lives. Some will move on to the next level of football, while others will conclude their careers.

Utah Will Honor Roughly 25 Players On Senior Day

Senior Day provides a moment for players, their families, teammates, and coaches to reflect on their journey, celebrate their accomplishments, and bid farewell to a fanbase and sport that has played a significant role in their lives.

“A lot of them have been involved in a bunch of wins for us, a couple championships, and so very appreciative in that regard,” Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham said. “They’ve shown a lot of resiliency, a lot of character, a lot of toughness, and grateful to them for that and proud of them.”

Utah will honor at least 24 football players during Saturday’s Senior Day game: Cole Becker, Micah Bernard, Luke Bottari, Jack Bouwmeester, Josh Calvert, Van Fillinger, David Fotu, Alaka’i Gilman, JT Greep, Nick Howe, Falcon Kaumatule, Johnny Maea, Shinatro Mann, Munir McClain, Connor O’Toole, Money Parks, Karene Reid, Dorian Singer, Miki Suguturaga, Junior Tafuna, Zemaiah Vaughn, and Charlie Vincent will all walk in the program’s pregame ceremony.

Saturday serves as a moment to honor these senior players’ dedication, hard work, and achievements, both on the field and in the class room.

“That’s why they’re here. Ultimately, that’s why you go to college, to get your degree and our guys take care of business in that regard,” Whittingham said.

Utah To Recognize Two Special Honorees

Saturday’s Senior Day will feature Ty Jordan and Aaron Lowe, who have significantly influenced the program over the last four years.

“Those two young men were terrific people, really good football players, great personalities,” Whittingham said. “This would’ve been their senior year; that’s why we’re honoring them.”

Senior Day traditionally includes family members in the celebration. The families of Jordan and Lowe will be on hand as Utah honors its two beloved, fallen players in what would have been their senior year.

“Their families will be here, and we’ll honor them as well,” Whittingham said. “Every time I think about it, it’s very difficult and the most difficult thing I’ve ever gone through in my career.”

Their lasting impact could be felt in Junior Tafuna’s emotionally charged response when asked about his two classmates.

“I’m grateful, and I’m humbled just because I’m still living and breathing. They’re my class. After this year, no one’s going to know who they are— just love them. Grateful for them,” he said as he held back his emotion.

Utah has honored these two in so many meaningful ways since their passing. Saturday’s Senior Day is set to be another emotional event to remember them.
