SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah Jazz have 12 games and less than a month left in their 2024-2025 campaign.

It was clear from very early on that the franchise’s focus was on the lottery rather than title contention. Where does Utah currently stand, and how will the chips fall come mid-April?

Every week on the Jazz Notes podcast, Ben Anderson and Chandler Holt take a look at the standings and what’s coming up for Utah.

Today’s Look At The NBA Standings

The Jazz sit at 16-54 through 70 games. That puts them 15th in the Western Conference and 29th overall.

The win over Washington wasn’t ideal but not the end of the world. Utah still has the same odds of the top pick and could still very well end up at 30th before the NBA season comes to a close.

The only benefit that comes with finishing last as opposed to 29th or 28th is how far you can fall. Currently, the Wizards can only drop as low as 5th while Utah can drop to 6th.

Even with an extra win, Utah is tied with Washington as they have one more loss. They are separated from Charlotte and New Orleans by 2.5 and three games respectively.

What’s Next For The Jazz, Other Lottery Hopefuls

Considering Utah has a sizable gap between the Hornets and Pelicans, we will move our focus from four teams to just two.

The Wizards are one of just two teams with 14 games left on their schedule. This doesn’t mean much. However, that is two more chances they have to sneak out a win. This paired with the fact that they have the ninth-easiest remaining schedule points to the fact that they will pick up at least a couple more wins.

Meanwhile, Utah has the second-toughest remaining schedule. The combined winning percentage of the Jazz’s remaining opponents is over 60 percent. They play just three more games against teams with losing records and all three of those games are on the road.

ESPN projects Utah to finish with 18.3 wins and Washington to finish with 19.9 wins.

What Does This Mean?

Unfortunately, not much.

As previously mentioned, having the worst record prevents the Jazz from falling lower than five. But they still would share a 14 percent chance at the top pick with two other teams.

Since the NBA changed the lottery odds back in 2019, the team with the worst record has yet to win the lottery. The Jazz have also never picked first in the NBA Draft.

On the bright side, both of those streaks are bound to end at some point. That could happen on May 12 as the ping pong balls decide every team’s fate.
