SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Jazz’s slow start to the season extended through the early homestand as they fell to 1-5 with a loss to the Portland Trail Blazers on Saturday.
Some of the recurring concerns with the team showed up in full force, except for one.

Head coach Will Hardy started his postgame press conference by simply saying, “I thought we guarded well enough to win the game.”
A statement that probably couldn’t have been said about the Jazz’s other four losses. But it applied well to Saturday’s game.
Utah forced 19 Portland turnovers. The problem? They gave up 20 of their own, as well as nine more points off of those turnovers.
The Jazz also lost the rebounding battle, put the Blazers at the line for 41 free throw attempts, and shot just 37.2 percent from the field and 27.5 percent from three.
The Blazers have stuck Camara on whoever takes the ball up for the Jazz. He’s had looks at George, Peterson, and Collier early.
My guess is it’s an effort to force some early turnovers from the Jazz offense.

Slow Start Exposes Lack Of Experience For Young Jazz
Similar to the season-opener in Memphis, the Utah Jazz went down big early and could never string together enough stops or quality offensive possessions to threaten a comeback.
Utah started the game shooting 3/13 from the field. By halftime, they were shooting 33 percent from the field and 25 percent from three.
Portland’s offense wasn’t perfect on Saturday either, but they were able to do the small things like draw fouls and close possessions with defensive rebounds.
Jazz vs. Spurs Quick Hits
- After getting killed on the glass in the season opener, the Jazz won the rebounding battle in four straight games. That streak ended on Saturday.
- Darryn Peterson looked the most comfortable on both ends against Portland. The Blazers applied heavy ball pressure all game, but the rookie finished as the teams leading scorer with 16 points.
- Five Jazz players finished with three turnovers. Seven players had at least one.
- The Utah Jazz will take off on their first extended road trip of the season this week, starting with the San Antonio Spurs on Monday, November 2. That game will tip off at 6:30 p.m. (MT).
