Utah Football’s Defensive Leaders Determined To Raise The Standard

SALT LAKE CITYKyle Whittingham and his Utah football program kicked off spring ball this week. There’s a lot of optimism around this new squad, and many are determined to raise the level of play in 2025.

Though there were bright spots throughout the year, the ultimate result was that Utah was not good enough.

Utah finished the year 5-7, well below the standard it holds itself to and is looking to return to form.

Morgan Scalley said.

“We were not good enough in run defense last year and didn’t have enough takeaways, so those two things are the biggest things for us,” defensive coordinator

His defensive leaders echoed a lot of the same sentiments that they know they need to be better next season.

Utah football is about winning and playing great defense

After returning from a season-ending injury in 2023, Fano returned surprisingly fast but made a positive impact all last season.

“When you come to Utah, you not only come here to win, but you come here to play really good defense,” Fano shared.

He knows that they did not live up to the high expectations established at Utah, but he’s focused on rebuilding that level of play.

“You don’t come to Utah unless you want to win football games, and last year, we didn’t live up to that expectation,” Fano shared. “Focusing on the defensive side, we want to dominate, and our mindset should be nobody crossing the 50.”

It’s all about buying into the culture during spring ball

The gifted backer’s 2024 campaign was somewhat up and down. The important thing is that his level of play finished the season on an upward trend.

Barton finished the year 72 total tackles, 5.0 for loss, and 2.0 for sacks. He added two interceptions, one returned for a touchdown, and four pass breakups.

Key to the defensive unit leveling up?  Barton believes it’s pretty simple. “Just living the culture, getting all the new guys to buy into the culture, and we’ll be just fine.”

Barton recognizes his growth and development from when he first joined the program. However, he also knows that he needs to reach another level and knows what he needs to address to do so.

“Totally different player, they do a great job of developing here,” Barton said. “There’s still a lot of improvement to make in open field tackling, I’ve got to be better there. Then just general foot fire, foot quickness, and natural bend, I’m working on a lot of that.”

Spring ball is about building off of last season

The talented defensive back really came into his own last season. He finished with 48 tackles, 4.0 for loss, to go along with two interceptions and eight pass breakups.

Expectations have been raised for Snowden entering year three. He’s got all the qualities to become a truly elite cornerback in college football next season.

“Just building off of last season, having a full year of starting, I feel like I was able to make mistakes and learn from them,” Snowden shared. “The game is starting to slow down a lot, and I’m starting to feel really comfortable out there. I’ve just got to keep my head down and keep working.”

All the little details will be key to his taking those next steps. However, Snowden feels good about where his game is at and how it’s developing.

“It’s all about the fundamentals and really all the small, little details, and I’m just trying to master every little technique,” Snowden said.
