2026 Linebacker LaGary Mitchell Commits To Utah Football

SALT LAKE CITY – Kyle Whittingham and Utah football got on the board with their first commit of the month after flipping Boise State linebacker pledge, LaGary Mitchell.

One of the top linebackers out west, Mitchell, is a promising athlete for the position. He committed to Boise State last fall, however, Colton Swan never relented in his pursuit of the gifted backer.
At 6-foot-3, 205 pounds, Mitchell has a great frame for the next level. He also has the athleticism to be a fairly dynamic and versatile defender in the Utah defense. Mitchell has earned a three-star 87 rating according to 247 Sports and ranks as the No. 73 linebacker in the class.
The Utes welcomed their first group of official visitors in what will be the biggest recruiting stretch of the cycle. Utah welcomed 12 official visitors in the 2026 class to campus for official visits.
Along with Mitchell, Utah brought in four-star two-way athlete Salesi Moa, four-star offensive lineman Kelvin Obot, four-star safety Chance Collins, three-star offensive lineman Pulelei’ite Primus, three-star receiver Kohen Brown, three-star cornerback Jaxson Gates, three-star cornerback Major Hinchen, three-star safety Carter Stewart, three-star receiver Kaue Akana, three-star defensive lineman Lopeti Moala, and three-star linebacker Adam Bywater.
With Mitchell on board, he becomes Utah’s second commit and joins Texas linebacker/edge prospect Preston Pitts in the class.
How does LaGary Mitchell fit with Utah football?
At 6-foot-3, 208 pounds, Mitchell tested well at the UA Next camp last month. Mitchell has an outstanding frame for the defensive side of the ball at the college level. He should be able to pack on size fairly easily without impacting his athleticism.
He is committed as a linebacker and shows the ability to play in space, including good ball skills. He looks comfortable dropping into coverage and defending the middle of the field. However, Mitchell is adept at attacking the backfield. He plays in attack mode and is constantly trying to force turnovers.
Mitchell looks like a prototypical Stud or Mac linebacker, thanks to his frame, comfort patrolling the middle of the field, and physicality around the line of scrimmage. That sort of versatility adds scheme and positional flexibility, which is vital at the college level and beyond.
Mitchell is a great addition to the class. He’s been a big priority for Coach Swan and the defensive coaches. He has the potential to become an impact linebacker in this defense.
