SALT LAKE CITY – Kyle Whittingham and Utah football secured the centerpiece of the class with the commitment of quarterback Michael Johnson.

Johnson emerged as a priority for offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Jason Beck last month.

As one of the program’s official visitors this weekend, Utah was able to close the deal on their quarterback of the class.

As a junior, Johnson completed 178-of-310 passes for 2700 yards and 24 touchdowns to just six interceptions. He added 618 yards and 10 touchdowns on 130 rushing attempts.

Johnson was previously committed to Mississippi State and holds offers from programs like Cincinnati, Purdue, UCF, and West Virginia. The 6-foot, 170-pound quarterback has earned an 87 three-star rating and checks in as the No. 45 quarterback according to 247 Sports.

The Utes welcomed their second group of official visitors this weekend. Along with Johnson, Utah hosted offensive lineman Collin Campbell, offensive lineman Moses Sparks, running back LaMarcus Bell, receiver Ace Theus, tight end Parker Ord, tight end Bear Fisher, and cornerback Toray Davis.

With Johnson on board, he becomes Utah’s fourth commit of the class, the third this month, and second this week. He joins Texas linebacker/edge prospect Preston Pitts, Idaho linebacker LaGary Mitchell in the class, and California cornerback Major Hinchen.

How does Michael Johnson fit with Utah football?

At 6-foot and 170 pounds, Johnson has the frame necessary to add weight and strength. Physical development will enhance his overall talent and skill level.

Thanks to his multi-sport background, Johnson is a dynamic athlete. He has the speed and change of direction that should make him one of the more dynamic quarterbacks at the next level.

That athleticism projects well in the Utah offense. Beck will be able to utilize Johnson’s athleticism as a primary option in the run game, while Johnson will take advantage of it in the pocket. He accelerates quickly and can navigate traffic with ease.

As a passer, his mechanics are influenced by his baseball background. He has an easy, quick delivery and snaps the ball out of his hand. He can throw the ball with velocity, on a tight line, especially on short and intermediate routes.

In regards to the deep ball, he has more than enough arm to stretch the field. He can easily make throws down the field to his vertical threats. He can get the ball out quickly and fairly effortlessly, even on vertical throws.

Long-term potential is definitely there as his best football is ahead of him. Johnson has the tools that make him a promising quarterback prospect.
