SALT LAKE CITY – Kyle Whittingham and Utah football have landed the commitment of La Quinta HS (CA) cornerback Major Hinchen.

The promising defensive back prospect was part of Utah’s first group of official visitors that tripped to Salt Lake City on May 30.

After visiting California officially this past weekend, Hinchen has announced his commitment to the Utes.

CB Major Hinchen is the latest to commit to Utah football

6-foot-2, 175 pounds, he has a tremendous frame for the cornerback position. At his size, Hinchen possesses plus-arm length, which is ideal for the outside cornerback position. Though Hinchen isn’t rated, he’s received 13 scholarship offers that include BYU, California, Missouri, and many others.

Hinchen is a dual-sport athlete who also competes in track. He owns multiple sub-11-second times in the 100-meter, including a personal best 10.81 seconds. That track background is evident in his athleticism on the field.

He was part of the first group of official visitors last weekend that included: Four-star two-way athlete Salesi Moa, four-star offensive lineman Kelvin Obot, four-star safety Chance Collins, three-star offensive lineman Pulelei’ite Primus, three-star receiver Kohen Brown, three-star cornerback Jaxson Gates, three-star linebacker and commit LaGary Mitchell, three-star safety Carter Stewart, three-star receiver Kaue Akana, three-star defensive lineman Lopeti Moala, and three-star linebacker Adam Bywater.

With Hinchen on board, he becomes Utah’s third commit and second from the first group of visitors. He joins Texas linebacker/edge prospect Preston Pitts and Idaho linebacker LaGary Mitchell in the class.

How does Major Hinchen fit with Utah football?

Hinchen has a promising outlook thanks primarily to his combination of size and athleticism. He is fluid and capable of mirroring his current competition very effectively. With two interceptions and a handful of pass deflections, he’s shown flashes of ball skills. Most impressively, he’s a willing tackler and physical presence on the outside.

All in all, there is a lot to like about Hinchen and his projection. He has all the requisite athletic and physical traits, though he will need to get stronger, but all of the raw talent is there.

Utah has a strong reputation in the defensive secondary, particularly with taking under-the-radar prospects like Hinchen and developing them into NFL-level players.
