Report: AD Diana Sabau Leaving Utah State For Maryland

LOGAN, Utah – After less than two academic years at the helm of the Utah State Athletics Department, Diana Sabau is reportedly seeking greener pastures.

Multiple reports surfaced on Tuesday, July 8, that Sabau will be departing USU for a position at the University of Maryland.

If reports are accurate, Utah State enters the 2025-26 academic year without a President or Athletics Director.

About Diana Sabau

Sabau leaves behind a strong, albeit brief, legacy in Logan.

She has overseen the Utah State Athletics Department, which has made significant financial and personnel advances in many individual programs since her arrival in August 2023.

The Aggies were able to raise more than $30 million in gifts and pledges during Sabau’s time.

She also oversaw six Mountain West Conference titles.

• Men’s basketball (2023-24).
• Women’s soccer (2023-24 and 2024-25).
• Men’s tennis (2023-24).
• Women’s volleyball (2023-24).
• Women’s gymnastics (2024-25)

The most significant accomplishment in the Sabau era is Utah State receiving and accepting an offer to join the new-look Pac-12.

Following in the steps of several soon-to-be former members of the Mountain West Conference, the Aggies will have the chance to make a new name for a once-great conference.

Sabau oversaw the hiring of several head coaches in her stint as an Aggie.

Notably, she brought in a men’s basketball head coach (Jerrod Calhoun) who reached the NCAA Tournament in his first season, and Wesley Johnson to lead the women’s basketball program in the same offseason.

Sabau also hired former BYU head coach Bronco Mendenhall to lead the Aggies football program into the Pac-12.
