BYU Football Season-Opener Sets Program Record For Largest Shutout

PROVO, Utah – It took the BYU Cougars 11:02 to score in 2025. They took off like a rocket from there, setting the program record for a shutout in a 69-0 win over Portland State.

The previous record was a 65-0 win over New Mexico in 1988.

The BYU Cougars began the 2025 season by hosting Portland State at LaVell Edwards Stadium on Saturday, August 30.

True freshman QB Bear Bachmeier accounted for five touchdowns. He threw for 97 yards (7-of-11) and three touchdowns, while scoring twice on the ground.

The Cougars turned a 14-0 first-quarter lead into a 49-0 halftime shellacking after scoring four second-period TDs.

Seven BYU players scored touchdowns. Will Ferrin’s 9-of-9 extra points finish one extra point shy of tying the program record.

69 points are the most scored by a BYU team since 2015.
