Big 12 Recognizes Bear Bachmeier For Masterful Collegiate Debut

PROVO, Utah – After accounting for five touchdowns in one half of football during his college debut, BYU football quarterback Bear Bachmeier was named Big 12 Freshman of the Week.
Bachmeier’s selection was likely an easy one when the Big 12 weekly awards were announced on Tuesday, September 2.

BYU piled up 42 points offensively with Bachmeier under center despite being held scoreless for the first 11:02 of the opening quarter.
Bachmeier completed 7-of-11 passes for 97 yards and three touchdowns. The first TD of his college career came on a completion to senior wideout Chase Roberts.
He showcased his speed and large frame, picking up 32 yards on the ground and scoring twice.
Bachmeier became the first FBS player since Indiana’s Antwaan Randle El to have at least three passing touchdowns and two rushing touchdowns in a debut.

About Bear Bachmeier
Bachmeier was one of the most decorated recruits in the country during his prep football career at Murrieta Valley High School in Murrieta, California.
He was considered a four-star recruit by on3 and Rivals, while ESPN listed Bachmeier as the 11th-best QB prospect in the class. Not a one-trick pony, Bachmeier also earned First Team All-Southwestern in 2024 while playing baseball. He lettered once in basketball.
Bachmeier finished his prep career with 6,810 passing yards and 59 touchdowns. The dual-threat QB also picked up 1,724 yards on the ground and scored 33 times. He averaged an astounding 10.6 yards per carry and 9.6 yards per completion.

Bachmeier signed with BYU’s week 2 opponent, the Stanford Cardinal, out of high school, spending the spring of 2025 working with the team before electing to transfer to BYU.
At 6’2 and 225 pounds, Bachmeier already has the requisite size to withstand the pounding that a Power Five QB will take over the course of a season.
His brother, Hank, played quarterback at Boise State, Louisiana Tech, and Wake Forest. Another brother, Tiger, is a junior wide receiver at BYU. His sister, Ella, ran track at the University of Redlands.
