SALT LAKE CITY—Two weeks in, and Utah has captured the attention of college football thanks in large part to quarterback Devon Dampier.

He diced up the UCLA Bruins defense in Pasadena to the tune of 21-of-25, 206 yards, two touchdowns, plus 87 yards and another score on the ground. He followed that up with another efficient outing against Cal Poly that featured three passing touchdowns.

Kyle Whittingham and his players are not taking victory laps; they know the product has to keep evolving and improving. However, the foundation of the offense has been laid, and it’s remarkably efficient.

Devon Dampier’s benefited from clean pockets, but still thrives under pressure

Through two games, Dampier has completed 38-of-48 passes (79.2%) for 398 yards and five touchdowns. He’s ran for 112 yards and one touchdown on 20 attempts.

His ability to keep Utah moving on offense is a breath of fresh air for Utah fans. The offense currently leads the Big 12 in success rate at 60.9%, which is nearly double the team’s success rate (35%) last season.

Dampier has benefited tremendously from the offensive line protecting him at Utah. He’s been kept clean on more than 75% of his dropbacks, which has led to 32-of-40 passing for 283 yards and four touchdowns.

Though not to the same degree, Dampier still performed significantly better when kept clean at New Mexico. He completed 63.5% of passes and owned a 9:5 TD: INT ratio last season.

What’s interesting about Dampier’s play so far at Utah is that he actually grades out higher when pressured, according to PFF. Dampier has earned a 74.9 grade when kept clean, while earning an 80.8 grade when pressured.

Dampier’s only been pressured on 14 plays, but he’s completed 6-of-9 passes for 115 yards and one touchdown, all six completions converted 1st downs.  Then, to make matters more difficult for opposing defenses, he’s scrambled five other times, which has led to three more 1st down conversions and two 10+ yard gains.

It’s that sort of impact that led Wyoming head coach Jay Sawvel to share how difficult it is to defend Dampier.

Protecting Dampier is the priority

Jason Beck’s new offense has been quite entertaining for numerous reasons. Perhaps the biggest reason why is how distinctly different it is from the previous offensive scheme.

There have been so many different run types, personnel packages, and creativity that it’s been hard to keep tabs on all of it. One of the more interesting changes has been the incorporation of a sixth offensive lineman, Solatoa Moeai.

He’s been wearing No. 49 and has been utilized at fullback, wing, and at guard. Moeai’s usage speaks to maximizing the strongest unit on the roster, but also a point of emphasis around protecting Dampier.

There have been a lot of six and even seven-man protections, which include tight ends and running backs.  It’s provided ample time and space for Dampier to operate in the pocket, which, obviously, he has benefited from.

However, when keeping extra bodies in to protect, it limits the number of options to throw to. And that’s played a role in the limited success in the downfield passing game. Coverage, good or bad, is all about the numbers game between receivers out in the pattern and defensive backs defending.

So, as Utah has leaned into protecting Dampier, it’s played a role in the lack of explosiveness in the passing game. Dampier finished last season with 71 attempts of 20+ yards. Through two games this season, he’s attempted such throws just six times.

Another factor, Whittingham has shared that they are looking for one or two other receivers to step up. Utah seems to have the most trust in Ryan Davis and Tobias Merriweather, while Larry Simmons and JJ Buchanan are in that mix as well.

Whittingham, Beck, Dampier, and the passing game will need to raise the bar in terms of what is being asked of them. However, Dampier has been exactly what Whittingham ordered through the first two weeks: decisive, accurate, and in command.

The floor of Utah’s passing game has been established—protection, quarterback poise, and efficiency. The ceiling will be set up when Utah trusts a fifth and sixth target, loosens the protection on its terms, and takes aim deeper down the field a few more times per game.
