PROVO, Utah – BYU football QB Bear Bachmeier is well on his way to earning Big 12 Freshman of the Year after securing his third Freshman of the Week honor in a 38-24 win over West Virginia.
Bachmeier set a career-high with 351 passing yards and a touchdown, finishing 14 yards shy of the program record. He added 43 yards on the ground and set the program’s freshman QB record for rushing touchdowns in a season with five.

From the very beginning, the true freshman was more crisp and deliberate with his passing than perhaps at any point in the season.
Bachmeier’s first pass of the game was a 47-yard completion to Chase Roberts, setting the tone for Roberts, who averaged more than 40 yards per catch on four receptions.

Later in the quarter, Bachmeier’s only TD pass came when he hit Parker Kingston on a screen pass. The former Roy Royal took it 54 yards untouched for a house call. It was Kingston’s second TD of the night after an earlier rushing score.
Roberts and Bachmeier linked up again midway through the second quarter for the longest completion of the California native’s young career.
Bachmeier took the snap and immediately fired a dart to Roberts on a slant. The senior wideout pulled away from the defense, exploding for 85 yards before being dragged down short of the goal line.
