SALT LAKE CITY— Kyle Whittingham and the Utah Utes head into one of the season’s defining moments: a primetime showdown at LaVell Edwards Stadium against No. 15 BYU. This isn’t just another rivalry game—this is a chance for Utah to make a statement on a national stage.
Utah come in with 5–1 record, while BYU is 6-0. The Utes know the stakes in Provo are bigger than wins and losses. It’s about toughness, resilience, and navigating any adversity.

The Stakes in the Big 12 Race and Beyond
Utah comes off a hard-fought 42-10 victory over Arizona State last weekend. Looking totally refreshed after a week of rest that seemed to sharpen both mind and body.
That win gave the Utes a valuable leg-up on one of the top contenders in the league. Now, they have an opportunity to add another one against rival BYU. The Cougars are ranked and will defend home turf with everything they’ve got.
For Utah, this is more than a game; it’s a “prove it” moment—an opportunity to make a statement that Utah belongs on the national stage and in the Big 12 conversation.
When Utah Has the Ball
Establishing the run is crucial. Utah’s offensive line must regain dominance after a midseason dip against Texas Tech. The Utes are among the top programs in the country in success rate (51.1% and No. 5 in the country) and red zone touchdown production (25 and No.4 in the country).
Controlling the line of scrimmage early allows Devon Dampier and the passing attack to operate in rhythm. Dampier has been steady all season—protecting the football, making plays in the air and on the ground—but BYU’s defense is fast, disciplined, and aggressive.
Utah has a two-headed monster in Wayshawn Parker and Na’Quari Rogers at running back. The two have combined for 633 yards and 9 touchdowns on the ground.
Ryan Davis and Dallen Bentley have proven to be the reliable go-to targets for Dampier through the air. The two have combined for 686 yards and 5 touchdowns through the air.
Utah must execute cleanly and avoid giving BYU short fields or momentum.

When BYU Has the Ball
All eyes will be on BYU quarterback Bear Bachmeier who has been explosive in 2025. Bachmeier’s mobility and arm strength keep defenses honest, while receivers like Chase Roberts can make big plays on any snap.

LJ Martin is a fantastic running back with the size and athleticism to create consistent chunk plays. Utah’s defense will need to mix discipline with aggression—no giveaways, no over-pursuits, no hesitation. Lander Barton and the linebackers will anchor the middle, while the defensive line pressures the backfield.
If Utah plays with their trademark physicality and discipline, they can contain BYU’s playmakers.
The Winning Recipe for Utah
- Protect the ball and stay fundamentally sound
Turnovers could decide this game. Utah and BYU are nearly identical in production, so the winner will be the team that makes the fewest mistakes. The winner will need a full 60-minute effort, where they cannot ease up. Every snap demands focus—BYU loves trick plays, so handling the ball cleanly and staying disciplined is non-negotiable. - Smith Snowden + base pass rush
This is a matchup to watch. Snowden doesn’t need to shut down Roberts or Kingston—he just needs to make them inefficient. If he succeeds, it allows Morgan Scalley to direct help elsewhere. Working hand in hand with coverage is the pass rush and John Henry Daley and Logan Fano have to pressure the quarterback. Expect aggressive, sometimes exotic looks from Morgan Scalley. Pressure could be the difference against a talented Bachmeier-led BYU offense. - Be dynamic and have fun
This Utah team has a confidence and swagger, it’s subtle and understated but it’s strong. These are playmakers who know how to make big plays. The lesson from Texas Tech: don’t overthink it. Play fast, celebrate your plays, and enjoy the game—fun can be a weapon in hostile Provo. - Get off to good start
Ideally, the Utes can punch the home team in the mouth from the first series. More importantly though is simply establish and sustaining drives, control the line of scrimmage, and dictate the rhythm early. A good start can set the tone for the entire rivalry showdown. - Make BYU respect the pass
Test the Cougars’ box early. Intermediate throws of 10–20 yards will force BYU to reset, opening up Utah’s balanced attack. The key, get BYU thinking about the pass as much as the run. - Limit BYU’s run game
BYU can be explosive on the ground, averaging 5.7 yards per carry. Utah must prevent sustained drives and keep them from chaining together first downs. Contain the run, force stops, and make BYU play from behind.

Utah vs BYU Score Prediction
Expect a hard-fought, physical showdown with national attention and conference implications on the line. Utah has the grit, the talent, and the resolve to walk out of Provo with a signature win.
If they play to their identity—aggressive, disciplined, and opportunistic—the Utes can leave the Cougars reeling.
Prediction: Utah 31, BYU 23
