Utah, Kansas Jayhawks Game Preview, Score Prediction

SALT LAKE CITYThe Runnin’ Utes head into one of the sport’s most intimidating arenas this Saturday, making their first-ever trip to Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence to take on No. 11 Kansas.

On paper, this contest pits a struggling Utah squad — mired at the bottom of the Big 12 with a 1-8 league mark — against a red-hot Jayhawks team riding a multi-game conference winning streak and firing on all cylinders at home.

With Utah’s season teetering and Kansas gunning for continued momentum in a crowded league title race, this isn’t just another road game — it’s a stark reality check on where this Utah rebuild stands in Year 1 of the Alex Jensen era.

  • Matchup: Utah Runnin’ Utes vs. Kansas Jayhawks
  • When: Saturday, February 7 — 12:30 p.m. Mountain Time

Where Each Team Stands

Kansas — Steady and Deep

The Jayhawks enter this game 17-5 overall and 7-2 in Big 12 play, riding a multi-game league winning streak and sitting near the top of the conference standings. Kansas has a versatile core built to attack from multiple spots, with Darryn Peterson emerging as a focal scoring option and supporting cast members providing secondary punch. While Petersen’s efficiency fluctuates, his presence still demands attention and stretches defenses. Kansas is also strong on the glass and defensively disciplined — the kind of profile that thrives at Allen Fieldhouse.

Utah — Struggling to Find Rhythm

The Runnin’ Utes enter 9-13 overall with a 1-8 Big 12 mark and a multi-game skid into this matchup, including a recent road slide. Under first-year head coach Alex Jensen, Utah has flashed effort and potential but hasn’t consistently translated that to results — especially on defense, where they’ve allowed too many easy looks and failed to clamp late possessions. The offense still rides through leading scorers like Terrence Brown and contributors Don McHenry and Keanu Dawes, yet scoring alone won’t be enough in Lawrence.

Last year the Utes handed Kansas a rare loss in Salt Lake City, but this version of Utah hasn’t shown enough consistency to replicate that without significant improvement.

Key Matchups Utah vs Kansas

If Utah wants a shot, the Utes absolutely have to get stops — not just general “tighten up,” but in specific player battles:

Utah vs. Darryn Peterson

  • One of Utah’s biggest defensive assignments Saturday will be Darryn Peterson, Kansas’ dynamic freshman and one of the best players in college basketball this season. Peterson combines size, a high-IQ, handle, and three-level scoring — a threat to knock down pull-ups, get downhill in isolation, or hit catch-and-shoot triples with efficiency. To defend him, Utah will need length on the ball, disciplined help defense to cut off his drives, and aggressive weak-side rotation to contest his pull-ups, which is asking a lot, and still may not do much.

Terrence Brown vs. Melvin Council Jr.

  • Brown’s Utah scoring engine (about 21.4 ppg) needs to over-deliver against Council’s length and disruptive on-ball defense. Council’s quick hands and anticipation can force Brown into tough pick-and-roll decisions. Brown has to win this one in isolation and transition to keep Utah’s offense moving. If he’s bottled up, Utah’s spacing collapses.

Don McHenry vs. Jamari McDowell/Elmarko Jackson

  • McHenry’s aggressive creation and 3-point threat has to keep the KU backcourt honest. Allen’s length and Evers’ physicality will test Utah’s ability to generate clean looks off the catch. Utah must protect the ball in halfcourt lifts; both Brown and McHenry need to make the extra pass instead of forcing contested shots against KU’s length.

Seydou Traore vs. Tre White

  •  Traore’s versatility as a wing scorer needs to find advantage against White’s physical rebounding and size. Winning this skinny wing battle gives Utah attacking options without turning the ball over. Traore has eclipsed double-digits in four of the last five games, and he’ll need to continue to play well on Saturday.

James Okonkwo & Keanu Dawes vs. Flory Bidunga

  • Inside, Utah’s frontcourt has some size to challenge Kansas, but Bidunga’s 6-10 frame and Mbiya’s 7-0 height make rebounding and rim protection a specific matchup Utah needs to win or at least neutralize to limit second-chance points. In order for Utah to have any sort of chance, Dawes has to be assertive, particularly on the glass. In Utah’s lone Big 12 win, Dawes grabbed 14 rebounds.

What To Watch

Overall, limiting second-chance points, forcing contested jumpers, and clogging driving lanes comes down to these individual battles — and Kansas is built to exploit even small defensive lapses here. Utah’s offense isn’t bad by efficiency standards, but in true road environments against disciplined defenses you need your best players to impose their will.

Above all else, Utah must protect the ball and take what the defense gives, but that’s easier said than done when high-IQ defenders like Council and Allen are breathing down drives. Utah can’t afford early turnovers. If Brown or McHenry cough it up against Kansas’ on-ball pressure, the Jayhawks will scrub halfcourt sets and go straight to transition.

Keeping the game deliberate and under control — and cutting down on cheap fouls — is a must. Kansas has the personnel to take advantage of every slip in that department. If Utah can win a few of these individual matchups — or at least stay competitive in them — they make this trip to Allen Fieldhouse meaningful. Otherwise it becomes another drill in the “learn on the road” ledger.

The Bottom Line

Utah’s trip to Allen Fieldhouse on Saturday is not going to be easy, in any way.  Kansas enters the game playing some of its most consistent basketball of the season, riding a six-game Big 12 winning streak and doing it at home against quality competition, including a recent win over BYU where multiple Jayhawks scorers delivered in a high-efficiency outing.

For Utah, the score isn’t the only line in the sand — but it’s hard to ignore that they’ve lost most of their recent league games and sit at the very bottom of the Big 12 standings while giving up significantly more points than they score on defense. Kansas, by contrast, has one of the better defensive profiles in the league — and at home, that matters even more.

Barring a near-perfect performance from the Utes — particularly on the defensive end and in handling pressure — the Jayhawks should run away with this one on their home court. A Utah loss wouldn’t be a surprise; keeping it respectable might be the only realistic win outcome for the Runnin’ Utes this weekend.

Score Prediction: Utah 68, Kansas 85
