His U.S. teammates, Jason Colby and Tate Frantz, tied for 30th, 1.4 points ahead of Bickner to squeak into the final.
Kevin Bickner Fails To Qualify For Final In Ski Jumping Normal Hill
Traveling over 53 miles per hour, Bickner flew for 100 meters. He earned a 17.0, out of a possible 20, from all five judges.
The main difference from those who qualified was the compensation points, which account for changing wind conditions and gate changes. Germany’s Philipp Raimund, who placed first in the opening round, had 13.1 compensation points compared to 6.1 for Bickner.
Raimund went on to win gold. Poland’s Kacper Tomasiak won silver, and Japan’s Ren Nikaido and Switzerland’s Gregor Deschwanden tied for Bronze.
Team USA’s Colby and Frantz placed 20th and 21st, respectively.
The U.S. has historically struggled in the Normal Hill event since it was added to the Olympic event list in 1964. The best finish for an American was ninth by Jeff Hastings in 1984.
