Team USA To Play For Gold After Soaring Past Sweden In Fifth-Straight Shutout

SALT LAKE CITY – The United States Women’s hockey team will play for gold in Milan after another dominant shutout performance against Sweden in the semifinal round.

Adding five more goals to their commanding 26 tournament tally, USA soared past Sweden 5-0.

Another explosive middle period propelled Team USA to the gold medal game

Despite a highly competitive first period that resulted in just a 1-0 lead for the United States heading into the first break, the Stars & Stripes erupted offensively in the second with four goals.

Eventually wearing down the Swedes, USA asserted themselves on the forecheck as they got pucks in deep, circulated the zone, generated traffic and went right at the net.

The result?

Four second period goals, three of which came in roughly two minutes.

Heading into the third, the United States simply defended their lead as they only allowed six shots on net.

Notably, goaltender Aerin Frankel posted the fifth-straight American shutout with 21 total saves.

What’s next for Team USA Hockey?

Following their victory over Sweden, the United States Women’s hockey team will play for gold against the winner of Switzerland and Canada on Thursday at 11:10 a.m. MT.

After defeating Germany, the United States Men’s hockey team will face the winner of Sweden and Latvia on Wednesday.

Puck drop is TBD.
