SALT LAKE CITY — Alex Jensen and his Utah men’s basketball team head to Tempe this weekend for a Saturday matinee showdown. This ranks as one of the bottom-tier Big 12 matchups on the slate, but it’s a meaningful for both teams’ final positioning and confidence.
The game will tip at 1:30 pm MT, and will air on TNT inside Desert Financial Arena. Utah’s had an ugly season but can salvage some late momentum; Arizona State still has flashes and talent but has been inconsistent and is fighting to stay above water in the conference.
In their last meeting this season, Arizona State beat Utah 71-63 — in a game where ASU controlled the pace and outworked the Utes on the boards. The Sun Devils played a zone defense that gave the Utes a ton of trouble.

Utah Runnin’ Utes, 9-16, 1-11 Big 12
-
Rough, grind-it-out year in the Big 12. Utah’s offense can be efficient (especially from beyond the arc), but the defense has been a major liability — opponents are scoring at will at times. Recent form shows more losses than wins, including a slide against quality opponents.
Arizona State Sun Devils, 13-12, 4-8 Big 12
-
Middle-of-the-pack with some glaring inconsistencies. ASU’s defense, like Utah’s, has struggled; they give up too many easy buckets and are sloppy on rebounding and transition coverage. Offensively, they have talent but lack the depth to sustain long runs against disciplined teams.
Utah vs. Arizona State by the numbers
The two teams are nearly identical statistically on offense and defense, which again, reinforces the idea of this game coming down to who simply wants it more.

Arizona State’s Stat Leaders
Points per game: Maurice Odum — 17.0 PPG: Odum is unquestionably ASU’s leading scorer and primary offensive engine, shouldering a heavy usage load every night.
Assists per game: Maurice Odum — 6.0 APG: Not just a scorer — Odum runs the Sun Devils’ attack, generating playmaking inside and out.
Rebounds per game: Massamba Diop — 5.9 RPG: Diop leads the Arizona State boards, anchoring the glass and battling inside for possessions.
Steals per game: Noah Meeusen — 1.5 SPG: Meeusen’s instincts and active hands make him one of ASU’s top disruptive defenders.
Blocks per game: Massamba Diop — 2.1 BPG: Diop is a rim protector first and foremost, altering shots and deterring looks in the paint.
Key Individual Matchup
Terrence Brown vs. Maurice Odum
In the last matchup, Brown struggled through his worst outing of the season. He finished just 2-of-16 from the field and turned it over five times, while being limited to single-digit scoring for only the second time this season. Brown obviously must have a much better outing as Utah’s primary scoring outlet — he must create for himself and others at a much more efficient rate.
On the defensive end, Brown must close the space between him and Odum on the perimeter. On the season, Odum has been a 35% shooter on threes above the break. Over the last five games, he’s shooting over 45% from threes in the corners.
What Utah Must Do to Win
Slow the game down with defense – Utah has to slow the game down on the defensive end — fewer wide-open threes, fewer second-chance points, and better closeouts. Normally Utah is middling defensively; against ASU’s sloppiness, they have to cash in.
Get Terrence Brown going early – After his last outing against the Sun Devils, getting off to a good start is important for Brown. When he scores efficiently, Utah’s offense flows. If he’s bottled up, Utah stagnates — and ASU’s best players are talented enough to seize momentum.
Limit turnovers – Utah turns the ball over too often and Arizona State turns offense over a lot. Protecting the rock is an absolute must for Utah, as points off turnovers is a big factor in ASU’s formula.
Rebound like the season depends on it – Because it does. Arizona State often gives up offensive rebounds; if Utah can clean the glass and grind possessions, they have a major edge.
The Bottom Line
This game comes down to execution. Utah and Arizona State are statistical twins — nearly identical scoring, shooting and defensive splits — so the winner will be the team that controls possessions and avoids self-inflicted mistakes.
This should be a competitive contest, but Utah will undoubtedly have to prove themselves against the zone defense that Arizona State surprisingly deployed against them in the last match up.
Score Prediction — Utah 63, Arizona State 68
