Former BYU star John Beck ignites Utah’s QB scene with 3DQB camp

Jun 3, 2026, 12:53 PM | Updated: 2:14 pm

LEHI – If you’ve watched a BYU football game this decade, you’ve probably heard a reference to 3DQB.

That’s because all of the quarterbacks who have played at BYU since 2020 have put in work at 3DQB.

Since Zach Wilson’s long drives from Utah to Southern California, where 3DQB is based, BYU signal-callers have been going to 3DQB. Jaren Hall, Kedon Slovis, Jake Retzlaff, and even BYU’s current starting QB, Bear Bachmeier, have all worked with 3DQB.

But it isn’t just BYU guys; NFL quarterbacks, both current and past pro greats, have trained at 3DQB.

From Tom Brady to current stars Matthew Stafford and Lamar Jackson, 3DQB has become one of the top spots for quarterback training since its founding in 2013 by former Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Adam Dedeaux and Dr. Tom House.

The strong connection to Utah and BYU quarterbacks is former Cougar great and NFL quarterback John Beck.

John Beck, 3DQB make the state of Utah a priority

Last weekend, 3DQB, highlighted by Beck, who lives in Southern California, brought their training methods back to Utah County to host a weekend camp at Lehi High School.

The state of Utah has become an annual fixture in 3DQB’s camp scene.

“The state means a lot to me,” John Beck said to KSL Sports. “The kids that are growing up in the area, I know a lot of their families. There’s just something coming back to the state of Utah, seeing those mountains, and helping the kids that are here.”

Along with Beck, Dedeaux, and former college QBs Cade McConnell (UTEP), Taylor Kelly (Arizona State), and Joe Pyle (Nevada), were on hand to train the young quarterbacks.

Former BYU and Tulane quarterback Jake Retzlaff, who recently completed rookie minicamps with the New York Jets and Seattle Seahawks, was also teaching the campers while wearing a BYU cap.

More than 30 quarterback campers were participating in the three-day camp.

“I think something that’s been really cool for the kids in the state is seeing guys like Zach Wilson, Jaren Hall, Jaxson Dart, guys that have become pro football players,” said Beck.

“They’ve had great success through high school, they go into college, have great success, then get drafted. I think that means a lot when you see their story, you know how hard they’re working, you see their success, and you say, ‘That guy grew up down the street from me. That guy played at Corner (Canyon), that guy played at Maple (Mountain). I want to be like that guy.'”

Teamming up with former BYU wide receiver Austin Collie

Quarterbacks need players to throw the football to. One of Beck’s teammates at BYU, former star receiver Austin Collie, was working with the wide receivers at the camp.

“Austin’s been doing this with us for quite a while, where we say, ‘let’s team up.’ We’ve got to have some wideouts here. Austin’s going to give them some wideout training, and they’re going to jump and catch for us.”

“You don’t know, way back in the early 2000s, that all of a sudden we’re going to be here 20-something years later helping the next generation of football players come through the state. I haven’t lived in the state for a long time, but it’s just funny how I’ve always been coming back to the state, connecting to it, helping a lot of people, and Austin’s been one of my good friends. Now, I’m training his son. He’s got a son that’s a wideout (Nash), a son that’s a quarterback (Banx), and sometimes both these kids are out here on the field, and I get to help him. It’s really cool.”

“How can we help in all aspects?”

While the 3DQB training on the field is what gets everyone’s attention, they look to help aspiring quarterbacks on and off the field.

“How can we help in all aspects?”

Beck gave a lecture on a topic that he’s passionate about: the mental and emotional aspect of sports.

“That’s an off-the-field thing that helps you perform on the field, and I think that some of the stuff I talk about is going to help these guys when their football careers are done. How can they handle themselves in the business environment, in a family environment?

“I know as a father and as a parent, I have to use those tools as I’m raising my kids. That’s the cool part, you learn so much through what we do with these quarterbacks, it carries them through all avenues of their life.”
