No. 14 BYU women’s soccer rallies to secure 1-1 draw with Oklahoma

PROVO — BYU women’s soccer held put up the shots, pushed forward in transition, and searched desperately for an equalizer.

But for 40 minutes of the second half of the Cougars’ fourth-straight home match Saturday afternoon in front of an announced crowd of 2,854 fans at South Field, Oklahoma held the hosts’ home unbeaten streak in the balance.

Enter Sophie Sivulich.

The 5-foot-3 winger collected a pass from Lucy Kesler at the corner of the penalty box, drove toward goal, and secured a deflection before burying the equalizer inside the far post to help 14th-ranked BYU survive with a 1-1 draw against the SEC’s Sooners.

“I was competitive and fired up to try to get that tie,” said Sivulich, the former Northridge High standout who started seven of eight matches as a freshman with one goal before being sidelined with an injury. “It’s better than a loss.”

Sivulich’s first goal of the year in six matches, including four starts, season-opening home run to four-straight unbeaten for a 4-1-1 start to head coach Jennifer Rockwood’s final campaign in Provo — and set up a massive derby match Thursday at in-state rival Utah State (7:30 p.m. MT, Pac-12 YouTube).

“We just needed someone to take some shots. We had the ball almost the entire game,” said Rockwood, whose team out-shot Oklahoma 15-10 but put just four shots on target. “We just challenged them to get their shot off, and Sophie got it and did a fantastic job.

“She’s moving forward, and getting lots of good experience right now,” Rockwood added of Sivulich.

Oklahoma (6-0-1) put four of its first six shots on target, including an open header from Fernanda Dantas that the first-half sub redirected from Emily Davey into the back of the net in the 43rd minute.

The Cougars had possession, including eight shots and nine corner kicks in the first hour of play on the natural grass surface played in 85-degree weather.

The hosts put just two shots on frame that Oklahoma goalkeeper Callie Sullivan turned aside.

But momentum changed after halftime, when the Cougars out-shot the SEC visitors 9-4. All they needed was the finishing touch.

Sivulich brought it, and Chelsea Peterson and Paiton Collins combined to make five saves in goal to rescue BYU’s home unbeaten streak with a well-placed goal off Sivulich’s right foot in the 84th minute.

“I think it showed some of our character, figuring out who BYU soccer is,” Sivulich said. “It just shows that we don’t quit.”

BYU women’s soccer sets up showdown with Utah State

The draw sets up a showdown Thursday night in Logan, where Utah State awaits with a 4-2-1 start.

The Aggies put eight goals past Utah Tech in an 8-1 win over the Trailblazers before hitting the road and dropping a 2-0 loss to No. 24 Colorado on Sunday afternoon. The loss snapped a five-match unbeaten streak for Manny Martins’ side that dated back to a 2-0 loss at No. 15 Kansas in the season opener and included wins over Utah Valley and Utah as well as the Trailblazers.

BYU opened the season with a 2-1 win at then-No. 9 UCLA to vault into the coaches’ national rankings, then rebounded from a 1-0 loss at Wisconsin with wins over USC, Minnesota and Colorado State before welcoming Oklahoma to Provo.

Thursday will be the Cougars’ nonconference finale, with Big 12 play beginning Friday, Sept. 18 at Arizona (8 p.m. MT, ESPN+).
