Four-star PG Jamaal McKnight Jr. talks about commitment to Utah
For McKnight, the relationships within Utah’s program were the biggest factor in his decision. Assistant coach Raphael Chillious played a significant role in developing that connection, helping establish the trust that ultimately brought McKnight into the class.
“The biggest reason is because of how family oriented Utah is,” McKnight said. “Everyone loves each other and want to be around each other.”
That sense of belonging was reinforced by the substance of Utah’s recruiting pitch. McKnight appreciated hearing an honest assessment of his game, including the areas that will require work as he prepares for college basketball.
“Another big thing is how invested they are in me,” McKnight said. “They didn’t just tell me the things I was great [at] but also told me the things I need to get better at.”

The relationship Chillious helped build gave Utah a foundation in the recruitment. The staff’s approach to McKnight’s development strengthened it, making him feel wanted while giving him reason to believe the coaches would challenge him.
His official visit also provided a memorable introduction to the university’s fan base.
McKnight attended Utah’s football game against Houston at Rice-Eccles Stadium, taking in an atmosphere that became one of the highlights of his weekend with the basketball program.
“It was crazy!” McKnight said. “The fans were into it, it was super loud in there, easily the best game I’ve been to in a while.”
The enthusiasm he encountered extended beyond the stadium.
“The community is amazing and everyone seems all in so that excites me a lot,” McKnight said.
For Utah, adding McKnight alongside Thompson advances its work on the 2027 class and delivers a recruiting victory over a finalist group that included Big 12 opponent Kansas.
For McKnight, the decision brings together the relationships, coaching and community he wanted in a college home.
“I can’t wait!!!!!” he said. “I love Utah already! All Glory to God.”
