DALLAS — The Utah Jazz’s early-season woes continued against the Dallas Mavericks on Friday night.
Despite a career-high scoring game from Darryn Peterson, Utah went down in the third quarter and was unable to close the gap down the stretch.
The 112-100 final places the Jazz at 1-8 on the season and 0-1 in NBA Cup play.

The first half was actually one of the best halves of Jazz basketball this season.
Utah shot 53.5 percent from the floor, had 17 assists on 23 made field goals, and held Kyrie Irving and Cooper Flagg to a combined six points.
Amid all of those green flags were two smaller red flags: turnovers and rebounding.
Some players (Ace, DP, Key) could’ve been more aggressive in looking for three-point jumpshots. But that’s really the only thing I could point to on that end.
The Jazz did a great job on Irving and Flagg, but let Washington have a good half as a result. I don’t mind the “make someone else beat you” mindset, but quicker rotations could’ve resulted in a couple of extra Dallas misses.

In the second half, the presence of those two issues outweighed all else. The Mavericks would go on to force 21 total turnovers, and they grabbed 13 more offensive rebounds.
Utah made more threes and shot considerably better from the field, but the deficit in the possession battle was too extreme.
The silver lining of the loss comes from Peterson and Lauri Markkanen. The rookie guard finished with 21 points and five assists on 50 percent shooting. Markkanen had 24 points and eight rebounds and shot over 50 percent from behind the arc.

Jazz vs. Mavericks Quick Hits
- In the last three games, Peterson’s assist to turnover total has been 5 to 2, 7 to 2, and 6 to 1. Postgame, the rookie talked about his assist numbers and running the point guard position, “Super comfortable. I’m playing with elite players, so it’s easy assists.”
- Ace Bailey had another solid game with 12 points, six rebounds, and solid defensive energy. But he shot 0/4 from three. That makes him 4/30 from three in the last five games. Right now, he’s shooting 22.5 percent from three on the season compared to nearly 35 percent in his rookie year.
- Josh Okogie had 12 of Utah’s 19 bench points against the Mavs.
- The Utah Jazz will head north from Dallas to take on the Minnesota Timberwolves on Sunday, November 8. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. (MT).
