ST. GEORGE, Utah – The Snow Canyon Warriors rode a big first half performance on their way to a Senior Night victory over the Dixie Flyers.

The Warriors hosted the Flyers on Friday, September 30.

Snow Canyon beat Dixie, 56-12.

The Flyers started the game on offense and were forced to punt on their opening drive of the night.

With 10:02 left in the first quarter, Will Warner returned the punt 75 yards to the house for a Snow Canyon touchdown and the initial points of the contest.

Less than five minutes later, Warner scored for the second time on a pass from Hunter Johnson. Warner’s touchdown reception gave the Warriors a 14-0 lead.

Snow Canyon finished the first 12 minutes of action with a Teagan Hugh touchdown run in the final minute. Hugh stretched Snow Canyon’s advantage to 21-0.

The Warriors continued to push the pedal to the metal in the second quarter. With 8:57 left in the first half, Johnson tossed a touchdown pass to Jake Hill and the Warriors went up 28-0.

Dixie scored its first points of the game on a big gain by Mason Kesterson with 8:31 remaining before the break. Kesterson broke loose for an 83-yard touchdown catch and run. The tight end’s reception made it 28-6 Snow Canyon after a failed extra point attempt.

The Warriors quickly responded as Warner returned to the end zone with his second special teams score of the night. Warner returned the ensuing kickoff to the house with 8:18 left in the quarter and Snow Canyon took a 35-6 lead.

With 1:25 remaining in the half, Kesterson intercepted a pass by Johnson and returned it to the end zone for a pick-six. The Flyers failed on a two-point conversion try and the scoreboard sat at 35-12.

Hugh caught a touchdown pass from Johnson with 1:10 left before the break and the Warriors went up 42-12.

Snow Canyon’s final score of the half came with 17 seconds left as Brooks Esplin hauled a pass from Johnson.

The Warriors went into the locker room with a 49-12 advantage.

The third quarter featured a running clock and the Warriors used it to their advantage as their ran the ball while marching down the field. With 3:57, left in the third quarter, Rockwell Jones found paydirt and Snow Canyon scored its final points of the night. Jones’ run made it a 56-12 game.

Neither team scored during the final 15 minutes of action and the Warriors captured a Senior Night win. Snow Canyon dedicated the game to Sophie Hill, the daughter of a member of the Warriors’ JV coaching staff. Hill passed away on September 23 after battling complications from Dravet Syndrome throughout her 11 years of life. A GoFundMe has been set up to assist the Hill family.*

With the win, the Warriors improved to a 5-3 record and the Flyers fell to 4-3.

Snow Canyon’s next game is on the road against the Pine View Panthers on Friday, October 7 at 7 p.m. (MDT). Dixie’s next contest is at home on October 7 at 7 p.m. against the Crimson Cliffs Mustangs.
