Game Night Live: Remembering Top Moments From 2020 High School Football Season

Oct 18, 2020, 8:22 PM | Updated: 9:26 pm

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The 2020 high school football regular season featured a number of memorable moments.

Now, teams from 2A through 6A are preparing for the postseason following UHSAA’s announcement of playoff seedings and brackets.

Before the elimination games begin, KSL SportsBeat’s Sam Farnsworth put together a list of some of his favorite memories from the regular season.

Corner Canyon’s comeback against Skyridge

Skyridge came up one yard short of ending Corner Canyon’s win streak.

The Falcons had a 26-14 lead going into the fourth quarter when Corner Canyon rattled off 15 points, including a touchdown pass from Jaxson Dart to Cody Hagen with 59 seconds left to take a 29-26 lead.

Skyridge drove down field and on the final play of the game, McCae Hillstead was tackled about a yard short of the goal line as time expired.

Long touchdowns in Roy vs. Davis

Roy at Davis on Sept. 18.

Six touchdowns of 60+ yards were scored in this game.

Davis QB Chance Trujillo had 6 total touchdowns and Roy QB Parker Kingston had 5 total TD.

The last 2 touchdown passes by Kingston came during the final 1:08 to pull Roy within one point.

The Royals went for the two-point conversion and got the win, 48-47.

The win gave Roy the Region 1 lead.

Bonneville beats Box Elder for region title

Bonneville finished the regular season 8-1.

The Lakers final win of the season, a 42-14 win over Box Elder gave Bonneville its first region title in 18 years.

Pandemic pauses play

We knew the season would be effected by the pandemic this year.

Some teams were affected more than others, specifically Orem. The Tigers went more than a month without playing a game and finished the season with only six games played (4-2).

COVID-19 canceled contest

Brighton and Skyline. They were both undefeated until Skyline fell in the final week of the regular season.

The two were scheduled to play for the Region 7 lead on September 25 but the game was canceled when four players on Skyline tested positive for COVID-19.

The virus took one of the best games of the year away from us.

Big Upset

The West Panthers upset the fifth ranked Kearns on the second to last weekend of the regular season. The win moved the Panthers into the Region 2 lead.

West trailed at halftime but scored 16 second half points to win 26-17. It was the biggest upset of the 2020 high school football season.

Miners vs. Leopards

Bingham beat East in overtime.

After losing its first two games of the season to Skyridge and Corner Canyon, Bingham started to roll.

On September 25, the Miners met the East Leopards, who built a 21-7 lead late in the third quarter. Bingham started a slow comeback and with 29 seconds left in the game, Troy Mehn threw a game-tying touchdown pass to send the game to overtime. East scored first on an Amine Amone touchdown run to go up 28-21. Then Bingham responded with a 10-yard Cael Wightman touchdown run.

Instead of the extra point for the tie, Bingham went for two and got the win, 29-28.

Winning Streaks

Of course Corner Canyon’s streak is impressive. The Chargers have won 36 straight games heading into the 2020 playoffs.

However, Sky View is also on a hot streak with 21 straight wins in a somewhat quiet 9-0 season for the Bobcats.

In 2A, Beaver continues to dominate. The Beavers have won 23 straight and finished the regular season at 10-0. Four of Beaver’s nine wins this season have come against 3A opponents. The Beavers’ average margin of victory during the streak was 42.5 points and they only allowed 6 points per game.

Region 4

The most entertaining region in the state!

Corner Canyon, Lone Peak, Skyridge, American Fork and Pleasant Grove.

Three of those four were in the 6A semifinals last season. It could easily happen again in 2020.
