Mountain Ridge Powers Past Herriman In Spectacular 6A Quarterfinal

HERRIMAN, Utah – The Mountain Ridge Sentinels punched their ticket to Rice-Eccles Stadium and the 6A semifinals with a 22-14 win.
Braylon Washington sealed the win with a late interception to send the Sentinels to the state semifinals for the first time in program history.
They will take on the No. 1 Corner Canyon Chargers on Friday, November 14, at 11 a.m. MT.

First Quarter
Mountain Ridge took a 7-0 lead when QB Jackson Hunt hooked up with Kohen Cunningham for a spectacular, one-handed touchdown grab.
Herriman moved the ball well on their first two offensive plays, but ended up settling for a punt with more than five minutes left in the period.
The Sentinel passing attack was similarly effective on their second drive.
A series of completions moved Mountain Ridge into the red zone. Senior running back Zach Ofisa finished the drive with a six-yard rushing score. The Sentinels led 14-0 after the extra point.
Mountain Ridge’s defense showed up on the first play from scrimmage for Herriman. Braylon Washington intercepted a pass deep in Mustang territory that gave his team all of the momentum.
Second Quarter
Herriman’s defense stepped up when they needed a big play. Sophomore Aden Jensen intercepted a tipped pass to give his team the ball back, trailing by 14.
Junior RB Felisi Felipe began wearing down the Sentinel defense with a strong rushing attack. Later in the drive, QB Tyler Messer found a wide-open receiver for a long touchdown.
Herriman converted a two-point conversion to make the score 14-8 with 6:57 left in the half.

Three punts ended the first half without any more fireworks.
Mountain Ridge led 14-8 at the break.
Third Quarter
Herriman came out of halftime with a dedicated focus to put the football in Felisi Felipe’s hands. The junior RB dragged his team into Mountain Ridge territory with some hard-nosed running.
Herriman turned the ball over on downs when Felipe was stopped on 4th and 3.
Mountain Ridge was forced to punt, but an interception got them the football back in Mustang territory with 3:27 left in the quarter.
The Sentinels had 1st and Goal inside the five, but a personal foul penalty forced them to go deep in the playbook. A wide receiver pass from Lincoln Twilley resulted in an interception just before the end of the quarter.
Fourth Quarter
Mountain Ridge’s defense came up with another stop, forcing a punt deep in Mustang territory.
The Sentinels added their third TD of the night when Jackson Hunt scrambled before locating senior Ashton Gates along the sideline for six. The two-point conversion gave the Sentinels a 22-8 lead with 7:27 left.

Nearly dead in the water, Messer and Felipe pieced together back-to-back massive runs. Felipe found the end zone after breaking some tackles and leaping over a defender diving at his feet. A bad snap cost Herriman the extra point.

Mountain Ridge drove into Herriman territory and forced the Mustangs to use all their timeouts before punting with 1:16 to play.
Mountain Ridge put the finishing touches on the win with an interception to clinch the 22-14 win.
