No. 2 Lone Peak Surges In Second Half To Knock Off No. 7 American Fork

AMERICAN FORK, Utah – After trailing for most of the first half, No. 2 Lone Peak scored 33 points in the second half to defeat No. 7 American Fork, 48-45.
Jonah Heimuli threw four touchdown passes, all to Weston Covey. Luke Durfey added two rushing TD’s and Eli Cloward had a score on the ground for the Knights.
In the loss, American Fork QB Maddux Madsen passed for five touchdowns, finding Fisher Ingersoll four times and one to Noah Moeaki. Cache Abo had a rushing TD.
Tightly Contested First Half
On the first drive the game, Lone Peak couldn’t get anything going and had to punt. American Fork reached the red zone with a big chunk play by tight end Noah Moeaki. The Cavemen settled for a field goal to take a 3-0 lead early in the first quarter.
The second time around, American Fork found the end zone as Madsen threw the TD pass to Moeaki. The Cavemen went up 10-0 in the opening period. It took one full quarter but Lone Peak was able to get into the end zone when Weston Covey scored the touchdown. They got the two-point conversion and trimmed the deficit to 10-8.
American Fork extended the lead once again when Madsen threw his second TD pass of the night, finding Fisher Ingersoll. With 2:37 left until halftime, AF was ahead 17-8.
Jonah Heimuli took the ball down to the AF 10-yard line. A couple of plays later, Heimuli threw a short TD pass to Weston Covey. After getting the PAT, Lone Peak cut American Fork’s lead to 17-15.
Lone Peak Surges Ahead In Second Half
After American Fork punted on their first possession of the second half, Lone Peak threw a pick that was returned all the way to the Knights’ one-yard line. On the very next play, Cache Abo ran in the touchdown. That score gave the Cavemen a two-possession lead, 24-15 early in the third quarter.
The Knights answered with a 26-yard TD from Eli Cloward. Lone Peak trailed by three, 24-21 in the third quarter after they couldn’t get the two point conversion.
It didn’t take long for American Fork to respond when Madsen threw a touchdown pass to Fisher Ingersoll to put the Cavemen up by 10 points, 31-21. Another deep ball in this game came from Heimuli to Crew McChesney that took the Knights into the red zone. On the next play, Luke Durfey ran in the touchdown. Lone Peak was within three once again, 31-28 in the third quarter.
On the first play of the fourth quarter, Heimuli threw another touchdown pass to Covey. Lone Peak took their first lead of the game, 34-31 after the Knights missed the extra point. Lone Peak extended the lead after Covey scored his fourth TD of the night. The Knights had a 41-31 lead midway through the fourth quarter.
American Fork responded with another TD catch by Fisher Ingersoll. They trimmed the deficit to 41-38 with 5:51 remaining in the 4th quarter. Later in the quarter, Durfey broke away and ran into the end zone. With 3:49 left, Lone Peak’s lead was 48-38.
The Cavemen were not throwing in the towel yet as Fisher Ingersoll scored his 4th touchdown. Lone Peak’s lead was 48-45 late in the fourth quarter.
Lone Peak improved their record to 8-1 on the season. They will wrap up the regular season at home on Wednesday, October 14 against No. 10 Pleasant Grove at 7 p.m.
American Fork dropped their record to 7-2 on the year. The Cavemen will face No. 1 Corner Canyon on the road in the regular season finale on Wednesday, October 14 at 7 p.m.
