SALT LAKE CITY – Tony Finau and Preston Summerhays have both shot an opening-round 3-over-par and find themselves 10 shots off the pace with three rounds remaining at the Waste Management Phoenix Open in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Finau, 32, found trouble almost immediately following bogeys on the second and third hole. Fortunately, he was able to steady himself by making nothing but pars to close out the front nine. Then, Finau found his first birdie of the day on the 10th but just two holes later made double-bogey on the par 3 12th. A birdie immediately followed the double before he closed out his disappointing round with a bogey on 17.

Summerhays, 19, is playing in just his third professional PGA Tour event and is looking to make the cut for the first time in his career. His round began in horror when he made a double-bogey on the second before making bogey on the fourth. The only birdie of his round occurred on the par 5 13th and sadly he immediately made bogey on the 14th to mitigate his good work a hole prior.

Due to darkness, play was suspended despite Summerhays still having two holes left to play.

Currently, Sahith Theegala leads the field at seven-under-par. Theegala is playing alongside Summerhays and still has the 17th and 18th hole to play to conclude his opening round.

Other notable players in the field include Brooks Koepka who finds himself five-under-par and in a tie for third, Xander Schauffele, Justin Thomas, Patrick Cantlay and Jon Rahm at four-under-par, and Jordan Spieth at one-under-par.
