SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Tony Finau made inroads on Friday to regain contention at the Tour Championship. His second-round three-under-par puts Finau back to nine-under-par in the tournament and eight back from the leader Patrick Cantlay.

Second Round Details

Finau began with three consecutive pars to calm his nerves. Then, he stumbled on the par 4 3rd hole when he three-putted and made his first bogey of the day. Sadly, the three-putt occurred following an approach shot that left him with just 19-feet for birdie.

But such is golf, and as all good golfers do they quickly erase all pain from the memory bank.

Finau found his first birdie of the day on the par 5 6th hole. He made another opening nine birdie on the par 4 8th when he dropped left to right 12-foot putt that caught the front lip and barely trickled into the bottom of the cup.

He made the turn at one-under-par.

His back nine began in a similar fashion to how his front nine started, with a bogey.

On the 10th, Finau drove his ball into the Bermuda rough just right of the fairway. He hacked his approach short of the green and left himself with a 92-yard chip for birdie. Despite his best efforts, he failed to convert his 14-foot par attempt and settled for his final bogey of the day.

The closing eight holes proved far more kind to Finau who concluded with three birdies, two of which came on 17 and 18. Finau made two 10 foot putts for birdie on 17 and 18 to provide him with momentum entering the weekend.

The Standings

Currently, Finau finds himself in a tie for fifth with a long list of players who find themselves on nine-under-par. Justin Thomas is at 10-under-par in fourth, Bryson DeChambeau third at 11-under, Jon Rahm in second at 16-under, and Cantlay leads the field at 17-under-par.

Tee times and pairings will be announced at a later date, but fans of Finau should expect him to tee off to begin his third round close to noon on Saturday given his current positioning.

Finau is vying for his best finish in the FedEx Cup playoffs. Previously, Finau’s best finish in the FedEx Cup standings occurred in 2018 when he concluded the season in sixth, this year, he entered the Playoff Finale in second position in the standings.
