Tony Finau Misses Cut At The Players Championship

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Tony Finau has missed the cut at The Players Championship after a second-round three-under-par, 69. The cut line was even par signifying Finau missed by three shots.

Better But Not Enough

For the first time since August 2020, Finau missed the cut at a PGA tournament. His second round was an improvement on his six-over-par first at TPC Sawgrass, however, unfortunately, his heroic attempt at making the cut fell short on Friday.

Finau began his second round on the back nine and started with momentum after a birdie on the par 5 11th hole. He continued his good form by birdieing 16,17, and 18 as he made the turn to the front nine. He posted a front-nine 32 leading his fans to believe that he was going to make the cut.

However, his momentum turned when he succumbed to his lone bogey of the day on the par 4 first hole. He would par the remaining eight holes and miss the cut by three shots.

Cut Streak Ends

The last tournament in which Finau missed the cut was back on August 20th when he was unable to play the weekend at The Northern Trust at TPC Boston.

During Finau’s second round, he managed to average 301 yards per drive hitting 50 percent of fairways. Remarkably, he hit 78 percent of greens in regulation which led to an average of -0.581 strokes gained with the flat stick.

The missed cut marks the third occasion in which Finau has failed to play on the weekend at The Players Championship. His first two missed cuts came following his first two attempts at the Stadium Course in 2016, and 2017. He made the cut in 2018, and 2019.

Lee Westwood currently leads the field at nine-under-par entering the weekend.
