Tony Finau Preparing For Nasty Winged Foot Golf Club Ahead Of US Open Championship

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The 120th US Open will take place this week at an iconic private golf course called Winged Foot, nestled some 25 miles north of Manhattan, New York in a small town named Mamaroneck.

US Open History
The US Open is the second oldest major golf tournament in the world only behind The Open Championship. The first US Open occurred when ten professionals and one amateur battled for a $350 purse in 1895 at a nine-hole golf course in Rhode Island.
The winner in 1895 was a British gentleman named Horace Rawlins who took home $150 in cash and a $50 gold medal. The tournament was dominated by British golfers at the beginning, but over time American’s have defended home soil impressively. The past five US Open champions all hail from the United States.
Winged Foot Golf Club
This year, the US Open will be hosted by the West course of Winged Foot Golf Club, a 7,264-yard track that contains narrow fairways, long rough, gusty winds and undulating greens. The West golf course was ranked by Golf Digest as the 8th best golf course in its 2009-10 listing of America’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses.
The 120th US Open marks the sixth occasion in which the West course at Winged Foot Golf Club has hosted the US Open. Only two other golf courses in America has hosted the tournament on more occasions.

Local Utah native and current PGA Tour professional, Tony Finau, is attempting to win his first Major. His previous best finish at a US Open came back in 2018 when he finished four shots behind champion Brooks Koepka in fifth place.
Finau has been playing historically well at majors as of late, a month ago he finished in a tie for fourth at the PGA Championship and was playing in one of the final groups on Sunday.
