SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Tony Finau struggled throughout the first round of the Tour Championship ending the day at six-under-par, carding a 72 following an opening round of two-over-par.

First Round Struggle

Finau began the tournament at eight-under-par and just two behind the tournament leader Patrick Cantlay. But quickly, Finau found the conditions at East Lake Gold Club challenging as he made a double-bogey on the 4th following a missed green in regulation and a three-putt.

He settled the nerves on the 6th when he made a brilliant birdie on the par 3. But back-to-back bogeys to close out the front nine had Finau falling down the leaderboard.

He rebounded with a birdie on 10 but followed it with a bogey on 12 before closing his round out with a much-needed birdie on 17.

The Numbers

History On The Line

Finau entered the Playoff Finale in the second position following his second-career PGA Tour victory at The Northern Trust. Previously, his best FedEx Cup finish came in 2018 when he concluded the season in sixth.

Finau finds himself seven shots off the leader Patrick Cantlay, who he was paired with on Thursday. World number one Jon Rahm is two shots back from Cantlay at 11-under-par while Harris English and Bryson DeChambeau find themselves in a T3 at eight-under-par.

The winner of the Tour Championship receives a season-high $15 million winners purse. The defending FedEx Cup champion is Dustin Johnson who currently finds himself in T10 at five-under-par.

Finau will play alongside Kevin Na on Friday with a tee time yet to be announced.
