Tony Finau Blows Up Throughout Opening Round Of BMW Championship

SALT LAKE CITY – Tony Finau has concluded his opening round at the BMW Championship at 6-over-par, 77, snapping an 11-round stretch of scores in the 60’s.

Finau entered the tournament ranked number 5 in the FedEx Cup standings but following his opening round at the BMW Championship is projected to drop five shots if he cannot get his tournament back on track over the following three rounds.
There is no cut at the BMW Championship.
The BMW Championship is the second of three FedEx Cup Playoff events. The top 70 players on the FedEx Cup standings are in the field. The top 30 players on the standings following the tournament will qualify for The Tour Championship held annually at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia. The winner of The Tour Championship will take home a winning prize of $18 million, the largest winning purse on the PGA Tour calendar.

Tony Finau Round Explained
Finau began the day with a bogey on the first, before making a triple bogey on the par 5 3rd hole. A closing opening nine bogey fell on the ninth and he made the turn at five-over-par after carding an opening nine 40.
The back nine consisted of a birdie on the 12th hole following a 37-foot putt up the hill that dropped. But two closing bogeys on 15 and 18 left Finau with a closing score of six-over-par.
The BMW Championship is being held at Wilmington Country Club in Wilmington, Delaware. The golf course is known for its large putting surfaces that are filled with a variety of slopes.
As the week continues, players, such as Justin Thomas, expect the golf course to dry out and pick up speed both on the fairways and greens.
Keegan Bradley leads the field following an opening round of seven-under-par, Adam Scott is in second at six-under, while Harold Varner III, Shane Lowry, Justin Thomas, and Russel Henry share third position at five-under-par.
