Independence Could Be An Option For Former BYU Conference Rival

COLORADO SPRINGS, Co. – After the Air Force Falcons took care of business against Fresno State on Saturday night, head coach Troy Calhoun told reporters that his team might be better off outside of the Mountain West.
“We are in a league where, to be blunt, I don’t know if it’s the route maybe should go,” Calhoun said in his post-game press conference.
First reported by Brent Briggeman of the Colorado Springs Gazette, Calhoun has mentioned the possibility of being in a different conference or even joining a school like BYU and rival Army as a Divison I FBS Independent before the season began.

Calhoun brought it up again on Saturday night after improving to 2-1 in Mountain West play with a 43-24 win over Fresno State. The team was predicted by media to win the West Division this season.
“I just don’t know if it’s really a match,” Calhoun said referring to the Mountain West. “I don’t know if it’s best.”
Other FBS Independent schools include Notre Dame, Liberty, New Mexico State and the University of Massachusetts. The University of Connecticut is expected to join the ranks of the independent schools in 2020.
Air Force (4-2, 2-1) will host Utah State (3-2, 2-0) in a Mountain West Conference Mountain Division matchup on Saturday, October 26 at Falcons Stadium.
