Finau Battles Through Second Round; Stays In Contention At The Open

Jul 19, 2019, 10:26 AM | Updated: 3:39 pm

PORTRUSH, Northern Ireland – Tony Finau entered the second day of play tied in third place after posting a first-round score of three under par.

Finau teed off at 2:47 a.m. mountain time for the second round, a much earlier start time compared to his day one 7:48 a.m. tee time.

Unfortunately, the second round did not get off to a good start as Finau bogeyed the first hole. He went on a par streak until the seventh and eighth holes where he birdied.

After a par on the ninth, he entered the second nine with a score of one under.

Finau’s start on the back nine was impressive, birdying two of the first three holes to sit at three-under-par. However, Finau had a difficult time with both par threes on the back nine, conceding bogeys on both the thirteenth and sixteenth to bring him back to two under par on the round.

Golfers are learning that if you miss the fairway or second cut at Royal Portrush, you will more than likely be punished on the scorecard. That was the case for Finau on eighteen as his drive went wayward and found the long pine right of the fairway.

Finau was forced to punch out and was hitting his third shot from 160 yards out. He found the green but was still some 25 feet from the pin. Finau two-putted to make bogey and got out of there with a final second-round score of one under par.

His combined score after two days is four under and he currently sits six shots off the leader, Shane Lowry.

Finau will make the cut and play weekend golf. Hoping to make a run on either Saturday or Sunday.

The cut line is projected to be +2.

Some notable golfers that will miss the cut are Tiger Woods (+6), Rory Mcllroy (+7), Phil Mickelson (+8) and Mark Leishman (+8).
